i can't remember coming across a thread like - apologies if one already exists.

it would be nice if everybody stuck to a similar leaf-on-white-page format - but don't feel obliged!

@LanceMac10 @0soyoung @AlainK let's get the ball rolling! Post your leaves, and maybe call-out some people!

don't be shy if the leaves aren't in peak coloration - my chartreuse katsura is a few weeks passed its prime spring coloration!

Good idea. But it's already 32°C at noon (89.6F, exceptional!), and since I have work to do, I'll stay indoors most of the day, in the cool of the house...

21:50, the night is setting.

I watered all of my trees this morning, like in the heat of July. Well, it was about 11, but I hate to wake up at 6:30 like I'll have to, tomorrow.

I watered them again about an hour ago, at 20:00 or so, but very lightly, they forecast "occasional showers of rain", so you never know, but it will be much cooler, 24°C in the afternoon, but much more humid anyway, ideal time for air-layerings, but I won't have the time I'm afraid.

We'll have two or three days with a high rate of humidty, then wlowly back to rather mild but dry weather. Not the best conditions for maple leaves, but at least very little wind. Maples hate dry winds.

common people! let's build a little inventory of cultivars both named and un-named!

@BobbyLane @MACH5

@Smoke you still have a bunch of different tridents?

@derek7745 your Taylors Pink is quite fancy. She's cute ;)

Why re-invent the wheel?

UBC Maple Forum is the best place in the world to discuss maples.

Thanks Alain! I'm very aware of these references and many others. They books don't leave my coffee table.

but it's fun to see what people are using for bonsai, and its also fun to see the un-named cultivars that people are using - i posted at least 2 that I know you've never seen :p Yves' Select and Monique's Pink.

i also thought it would be fun to get leaves on white page.

I thought you were on board too...
Good idea.
:)

Yes, yes, OK then.

Anyway, there's no competition between the two, the more, the merrier :D

it's fun to see what people are using for bonsai

The question is : is that maplemania or bonsaimania ?

I mean, a lot of what you posted are interesting for maple buffs, but not so many are good candidates for bonsai. That's what I said when I posted these on a French forum yesterday :

I think both of them are wonderful, yet I haven't ever seen a bonsai made from them, nor do I think I can make a good bonsai out of them.

i totally agree. on this instance i grabbed whatever was nearby to create some variety, overlooking arakawa, kiyo hime, kashima, etc.

by posting this in a bonsai forum, i was hoping to get fewer red sentinels and bloodgoods vel sim than I would get on UBC (although strictly landscape maples are welcome too, why not)

looks like this won't take off like I hope though! we'll see if it gains any traction in the days to come

@0soyoung thanks for sharing that account! I had not come across it!

Thanks for sharing @Japonicus ! What is this one exactly? I love the shape! Do they stay that small?
Hi Derek I have a couple unfortunates on this one.
Green Dissectum...beautiful orang in Fall.
Unfortunately being the cutting grown cultivar that it is, the roots on this one just didn't grab and take off like I hoped
so it remains in the 2-3/4" pot it came in last year. Also, I struggled to find a leaf I could cut off of it as well. Not going strong yet
so what leaf I did capture was most new growth, and a little undersized, though not far from the rest it has to offer.

I think the leaves will become more like the landscape version on the paper when this takes off,
but if the leaves are adapt to reduction, then yes they should keep the shape well.
This will be up-potted to a 4" soon, (slip out drop in) but afraid of damaging the root ball trying to torque wire down on it.
Will get resourceful in that respect with the wire.

Contrasts.

Acer japonicum "Green Cascade" is my favorite landscape Japanese maple. It has a low spreading habit and one can easily cover and most of a city lot (30 to 50 foot spread) if left be. Turns many colors in fall, but dominantly orange, rivaling shishigashira. I tried to propagate it by air layering to test its potential in bonsai culture but ran into to the same troubles as I have experienced with layers from my a.p. "shindeshojo" - layered horizontal branches, potted vertically, die the following spring after leafing out. However, I did not persist with it like I have shindeshojo.

Acer palmatum "Hiname Nishiki" has an upright habit. The full-size mature leaf is about 0.75 inch from the petiole to the tip of the central lobe/finger would be absolutely fabulous IMHO for mini/shohin. So far I have not succeeded in propagating it for this purpose. Nothing noteworthy about its fall color.

both of these maples are deceased. But this thread is useful, in terms of getting to see images of maples from different times of year and from less than ideal conditions. That way you can get a feel for the range of colors possible.

Purple Ghost - died quite a while ago. Autumn photo

Dang, I wish I had variety like that, or even space for variety.
Many species of maples have I not, but that which I have, I’ll post.
I took some Japanese maple cuttings from outside trees a few days ago, but they haven’t rooted and leafed out yet.

Thanks for the all contributions everyone! keep them coming!

@derek7745 your Taylors Pink is quite fancy. She's cute ;)

it's a terrible tree. it is a new cultivar, registered by dick van der maat in 2004 (http://www.dvandermaat.com/wp/acer-palmatum-taylor/). based on anecdotal evidence i've gathered from many others, it is a weak grower that requires little water and must be grown in almost complete shade. mine is living up to that reputation.

I have some strong palmatum root stock that has increased the vigor of 2 weak-type cultivars that have been grafted to it. I'm going to try a thread graft next spring before the buds break. (if I defoliate a branch and thread graft it now, i doubt it will push any new leaves before fall). If that works, i will consider multiple thread grafts onto a standard trunk. if that doesn't work out, this tree is just going to hang out in yard as a poor-growing landscape specimen
