Sekka Hinoki trouble

Looks amazing thanks. I ordered mine 3 weeks ago but haven’t heard from them or received it yet.
If I remember correctly, when I spoke with Bill, he was shipping in the Spring unless I requested otherwise.
I did, but our climate isn't terribly different from his. He gets more snow. If I were in zone 5 or 7, I would've waited.

I feel like I'm struggling to find a path forwards developing the style of these.
At least I got some wire on, and brought the branches down after selection
to let some light in. Perhaps this type of shrub lends itself more to a deciduous type broom style.
Branches need some more movement too.

I think these are the Devil's own. They only appear to be bonsaiable. Yes, the fronds of foliage are very small, but they don't really respond to helm. They want to grow into a pillar and if you thwart them you get a palmtree like bush. It'll take a better man than me to do something intelligent with one.

Have you seen bjorn’s video? The trick is to style it when is full so the sun penetrates the whole tree that way the inside parts don’t die

BUT, in the OP that tree looked pretty good before Joe Btfsplk bought the plant. I guess some people just have the touch, like the Angle of Death...

Yes. You only have to skim the pictures/video in this thread to find this video.
I like it, and the style of the original sekka herein is quite similar, but with a much better nebari.

I won't apply such a limited ideal to these projects. While I don't have show stopping styles, being at a the level I am,
we don't have to look very far beyond our car window to see conifers that follow this style, naturally.
Just a random Scots pine here for instance
this 1st picture by Jill Butler ^ isn't in a natural state much different from the ones I've styled.
There are many different palm trees, all have a special place, but I'm not seeing that here.
I pass by 2 needle pines often locally that aren't too dissimilar to how you put it...

It appears you're saying I ruined the tree I bought, but Joe Btfsplk ?
Moving a tree to my climate from another 2 weeks post potting.
Is that the Death angels' touch you're referring to? or the style I imposed to open it up and allow light in?

Humor. Relax. Joe Bftsplk was a character out of Lil' Abner who was the unluckiest man in the world. He had a little black rain cloud with lightening that followed him around.

I remember Lum and Abner, but they were passed onto me by my dad from the '30's era lol. Lil Abner IDK sorry.
Was he in the news paper funnies section? Sounds familiar.
Thank you for redirecting me here.
Betty White puts a big emphasis on humor adding to longevity. I should endeavour.
I would rather watch the Sound of Music than most comedies I see.

So I was just saying I wouldn't try to force this tree to take on a form like say one of Adairs' JWPs
or a gorgeous blue atlas with sharply sloping branches, rather working with what it gives me.
Too many folks find that style as the one and only best template.
+ I am struggling to vision a style otherwise. Open your collection to some sekka and see what
you can add if you haven't already added any :) The video shared of Bjorns styling cannot be the only way to go.
Earlier from cutting would be where to start I think, if one had to slope the branches down, or develop a more interesting trunk.
This is the sum total of what I'm struggling with styling these. At the stage I purchased these, young as they are, broom style
is my go to for now or horses blinds so to say.
Palm tree? Really? :D:D

Horse hockey . Like Nikes motto ...

Compared to Bjorn's styling, I am so lacking in that department.
If I could create the apex close to that I would be happy, but in the meantime I will be happy with
just the survival of the one from the OP given the turn around. Recovery + energy is the immediate goal.
I will take a step back from it this year. I have other hinokis to develop that will keep my hands off this one for a while.

I thoroughly agree with the "enhance what's there" attitude, especially as opposed to forcing a candidate tree to be some preconceived style. Alas, it doesn't always work for me. I once spent 3 hours working on a Hinoki, wiring and trimming and bending and stood up and immediately put it in the trash. I may not always know good when I see it, but I know what ruined looks like.

PRN (as needed). The one I still have in a more organic nursery/bonsai like blend from
the arboretum is in good health, but the soil holds moisture longer than the 2 hinokis I just potted
up in a more inorganic bonsai soil. Best not to dry out entirely.
What do you mean when you say PRN?

Any updates on these guys?
No, they're in Winter protection and my hinoki always look their worst over Winter.
But as Spring comes they will be back to theirselves again.
They are both alive and finished the growing season out on the + side.
Hold on a minute and I will upload a couple pics from my phone with them in storage.20220211_162937.jpg20220211_163007.jpg20220211_163020.jpg
Everything has its Winter coat on, but much healthier than when I started this thread.

Thanks - have you any success propagating?

I just ordered one myself. What soil mix do you use? I think I see bark in there?
Yes both pine bark and Douglas fir in equal portions.
Unfortunately, this was potted up while I was trying out DE.
I wouldn't mind Tiny Roots conifer, due to the particle size and the size of the pot, and how
tightly packed into the pot these roots are.
Besides a small portion of DE which I'll never use again...
I'm using equal parts of bark:Monto Clay:pumice:and lava rock from Bonsaijack.com

Great! Thank you! I also use Bonsai Jack’s mixes for most of my materials in development.
