Here’s an update of my Red pine entries into the Black pine contest. Still mad about the “Mikawa” seeds I bought. Buyer beware I guess. I’ve kept 5.
#1 - this one cracked a bit when I bent it. Lesson learned- double up on the wire. Should be ok.

#4. I decided to go root over rock with this one.
Here were the rock options. I went with the one on the left
I secured the tree to the rock with twine (twine will rot eventually). Then positioned the roots, protected them with a bit of sphagnum, and wrapped them tightly to the rock with packing film.
Finally, potted it up in a pond basket.

#5. Last years needles are healthy, but two year old needles have a bit of cast.

Overall they’re doing fine. A bit less vigorous in my opinion than the batch of black pine seedlings I grew.

Hi, I hope you don't mind sharing some knowledge. When you moved them to the pond baskets, did you just slip-pot them? Or did you work the roots beforehand? I'm asking because I have a couple of Ponderosas that I will be re-potting as well. Thanks!

I just did a bit of light root work, keeping the core intact. This season I did dig the seedling soil out a bit, but didn’t repot except for #4. At this stage JBP or JRP could have been bare-rooted, no problem. Not sure about Ponderosa.
