Satsuki Azalea ‘Kinsai’

Hi Brian,
That is a lovely tree. Can you expound upon the danger of hybrid cultivars reverting back? Can that occur on existing growth that has displayed the desired flowers?

Kinsai flowers have a tendency to revert from the thin petal to the fat petal, a little at a time, but they are dominant. Remove the branches with fat flowers to keep the thin ones. This one had a few fat-flowered shoots that were removed.

Trimmed up the growth extending behind the profile and caught this erodium in bloom, thought it was worth a photo.

I love this stage of kinsai flowers the most. Looks like little pops of fireworks.

??? so if you left the fat flowers, they would slowly take over the tree in flower, year by year?

Thanks, the pot is small, but it didn’t have much of a root ball. Think it was a recent import when I received it.

So far I have been lucky in lace wings with this one. My Kurume will get them at times. I think siting has a lot to do with it, and I keep this one in a lot of shade in a high humidity area. Lace wings love sun, heat, and dry.

I have a few small cuttings going, but I wouldn’t be comfortable selling any just yet, so if you are interested, PM me in the fall. Here is an update shot from this AM...looking pretty good.

Yes, it does!
I prefer Azaleas when they are starting to bloom than when they are completely covered with flowers. I like to enjoy the flowers lying on the vivid green foliage. Such a lovely contrast!

had one a few years ago. Fastest growing Azalea I have ever seen. Especially for a Kurume or Satsuki one. Then just died one winter in the ground. Nuccio's nursery does list this for sale if someone is interested you could reach out to them.

Here are a couple shots of the Kinsai in our Spring Show. Unfortunately, most of the Satsuki azaleas were just past peak this year.

Yes. You are absolutely correct, if i may say.
I know nothing about display rules/guidelines but one question has come to my mind. I hope you will not mind me asking : Could the accent/accompanying plant be put on the left of the Azalea pot and why?

I like the way the accent plant balances the left-to-right diagonal branch. I think it would look unbalanced on the left side. Looks like the color of the geisha costume matches the flower color beautifully, and she appears to be admiring the tree from afar. Very nicely done, IMHO.

...Geisha works quite well...and it could look cheap and amateurish VERY easily...…..like "people's choice" cheap.

Other than bloom reversion, is Kinsai more difficult than Kozan varieties?
