Sango-kaku

Kept this alive for six years or so. Goes on the poly'd up porch in winter so it freezes solid most of the time. It's a graft so I planned on attempting some air-layers once it grew some interesting areas.....

Your zone is colder than mine! How? You have to tell us every detail of how and where you keep this tree during the year and in the winter. LOL

I hate to be negative but I would never plant a coral bark maple. They always look anemic. You see them in front of peoples houses and I've never seen even one that looks like it's even halfway close to thriving. and I live in a place where it'sa pretty easy life for plants ... ( San Francisco Bay Area.) Maybe they do better in other parts of the country? They are unique, but they always look like they're half dead.

SF temps are definitely mild. I wonder if it's the fog.

I had one planted in the yard for 4 or 5 years. It didn't seem to like the S.C. heat. In the summer of '15, the top half died back. Late last April, after it fully leafed out, I decided what the h311, might as well dig it out because it will definitely die in the ground before summer ends. Just scooped it out, threw it in a large grow flat, and filled in with old bonsai soil. It completely wilted within 30 minutes, but the next morning it sprung back! And it's still going strong. Luckily, it threw out vigorous, true-to-the-cultivar growth low on the trunk. One of this weekend's projects is to do a couple of air layers at the top.

Pulled back the paper today, I think I might have something to work with!
