Red maple? Trident maple? Need help with ID

@Frozentreehugger thank you! That’s a good bit of information to know!
@CptnGlyn thank you for sharing the book with the class! I’m definitely excited to get these growing next spring!
@Leo in N E Illinois thank you for the advice! I will het them in stratification tonight. And advice on how to layer them in the sphagnum?

Oh, and I do believe it could be Acer nigrum. A tidbit mentioned in the Illinois tree site, mentions soils. Acer nigrum is found on somewhat more alkaline soils, where as sugar maple is typically on acidic soils. The southern sugar maple is Acer saccharum drummondii. I think your maple is a better fit for nigrum.

I also checked Acer truncatum, it is not a good fit for truncatum.

As promised sorry for the after dark pics . This is pure northern Acer Nigrum raised from seed . Plant was sourced local eastern Ontario . Native tree specialist nursery . Government certified pure . Acer Nigrum Seed source is also local recognized as arguable the most northern large pure mature stand . South of Ottawa Ontario . ( also my source of the strongest flavour darkest grade of maple syrup ) see my thread . Maple syrup . For more info . Tree is young but does not show the drooping leaf nature or the stipules Dirr refers to . The mature trees do have the drooping leaves Also what Dirr has to say about the black maple

@Frozentreehugger those are good pictures to reference. Thank you. I think what we are seeing is the genetic variation of black maple along with different growing conditions. The southern climate and the fact that this tree is a lawn tree is probably contributing to the variation we’re seeing also. I’m excited to get these seeds this year, Hopefully they will have some interesting variations in the seedlings. Anyone else wanna try some of these with me to see if you get a similar tree in a different part of the country?

The international border between you and me . Limits trade between us . Basically the deal is live trees very difficult to cross the border . Seeds in the other hand can just be dropped in the mail going both ways . With just a few species restricted . ( mostly fruit trees ) I would very much appreciate trying your seeds . But considering the climate change . I feel it is prudent to see what leaf shape size . You get first . Maybe next year we see if they will survive the cold . Thanks bro going the other way let me know if there is anything I can send you more than happy to help .

Tonight the maple tree is at best a distant second place . The Apple 🍎 is king . In the form of my wife’s fresh baked macintosh apple pie 👍👍 the original Mac tree was found . And orchard created about 15 miles down the road

Ya lots of apple orchards around here . Was not raised in this area . The land is very flat extending all the way into New York State . Unfortunately it’s fairly high quality farm land . There is no neglected to hilly old pastures . You know the type only used to graze cattle and sheep . . Dotted with nuisance stepped on chewed on short stumpy apple trees . 😂😂😂🥵🥵🥵🥵
