Questions about pruning??

Its now October where im located so I wont be doing any pruning til Spring, but I would like to get an understanding of it now. Can you guys tell me how to prune properly? I know there is pruning for back budding, certain pruning to keep the tree small and full, im a new to bonsai and a bit lost on a few topics. Any help would be much appreciated.

Two thing would be helpful: A photo of the tree. The nomenclature of the tree. Is it a Juniper and what kind or is it something else?

Sorry about no pic, waiting for my GF to get out of work with her camera. Ill have a pic up shortly. As for the species im almost positive its a chinese juniper.

It would help to tell your location, some areas are really different than others.
