Prunus Mume

I go
Crazy money up here. Just too damn expensive!
I got a damaged one (18" tall with 2 " trunk above base) at NEBG probably 8 years ago for maybe $100-150...it had had it's apex snapped off in transport from CA. Also, I suspect you could grow some outside as they're actually very cold hardy. They grow very quickly when they're happy. Get a few seedlings from Brent at evergreen gardenworks and give a shot.

Young rooted cuttings are cheap enough, older plants get pricey quick.

Bill Valvanis occasionally has them on his late winter bare root tree list. http://www.internationalbonsai.com/seedling list This year he seems to have only flowering cherries, but every other year or so he has a few different Ume cultivars.

Also Evergreen Gardenworks, http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/ Brent's gallon size trees are pretty nice as far as young material goes. Cuttings of good varieties, ume, cherries and plums.

Don't know why everyone doesn't have these trees,
If you have a few standing around that you would like to move on..
I started from seed because after 2 years of looking.. I decided growing from seed wil lget me these flowering in my garden faster :(

Great tree Brian - wish we could grow them here. Curious though - do you know of anyone who has tried to graft Ume onto any of our native prunus?

No. I think maybe @bonhe has. If you have any native prunus going, I could try sending you some scions. I have some long sacrifice branches going on a not-yet-blooming Ume from Brent, or could trim a few blooming shoots off this one. Just let me know.

We cut whips off some Ume at Boon's and cut them into several 3 inch scions. And then grafted them onto a landscape plum tree growing in Boon's garden.

Things like this seem like miracles to me!

Thanks a lot Brian - that is very kind of you. I may take you up on that, too. There are several prunus native to Texas - Black cherry, Cherry laurel, Mexican plum, and Flatwoods plum. All flower in the winter, but none have the beauty of Ume, in my opinion. I don't have one sitting on my bench today but I think I know where to get one to try.

Thanks
Scott

The story is pretty cool and the video is a must see.
Yeah, that is a cool tree. I have actually pulled a wild cherrie out of my garden, to try and graft a whole range of cherries on there. Primarely to get some insight & experience in grafting. But the 40 fruit species tree is an inspiration for the project.

I had a cutting taken from my landscape tree (that flowers) and it grew well all season... That is until my dog got it.

I just took some cuttings this weekend from a buddy's house. Looking forward to having. A few to play with... Maybe in about 50 years one of my cuttings would look somethi like BVF's tree.

Yes.....beautiful.....

But your scroll is Elitist and the paint color really takes away from the viewing pleasure.....

I'm only kidding.....
But that transfers, as it wouldn't if unsaid, to ......

Why don't you make yourself a nice Tokoname in that "bonsai at work" area...?

Kill a couple stones with one bird.

Speaking of.....if it does smell that good....
It could totally cover up one of those tiny poop's smell! Or does it go outside!

Short Version....

Nice!
