Prunus mume questions

Your Ume are great.
Thanks so much Leo. I actually sold the white one at the end of last year so the one above is the only one in a pot. Got a pink one in the ground but that will require more time to fatten up.

Do you find they do well in the ground in NY? I wanted to plant some but was thinking with the shock of -10 degrees F we get once in awhile in winter it’d be a no go

Im on Long Island so not the colder temps of northern NY but find they do just fine in the ground in terms of growing and bulking up. Only issue I’ve had is ruined flower buds due to late freezes as they were swelling and getting ready to open. Didn’t affect the seasons growth though.

Bigger issue in the ground was the animals chewing on them.

Makes sense and good to know, thanks! Going to keep kicking the tires on the idea this year once I see how they grow in a nursery container.

How cold does it get where you are? With temps that can get to -15 F over winter I’ve been trying to figure out if I’m too into the danger zone for ground growing…

Worst case scenario are a few days each winter in teens or worst single digits. most of the time I’d say the worst we see is 20s and 30s are the norm. I don’t think ground growing at those temps is an issue except that late freezes ruin flowers But don’t seem to affect leaf growth. In the last decade that I’ve been ground growing Ume I’d say the only issues temps have caused pertain to late freezes ruining flowers and pests chewing off branches. I’ve yet to experience ground growing problems due to cold in my climate, but just my experience. @Dav4 knows best on Bnut about MA growing,

Thanks! Yeah, @Dav4 if you have any thoughts I’m all ears. Flowers are nice, but not necessary, for this part of the process to me, so if that’s all that’s impacted I’ll likely plant one.

I only ground grew Ume for a year or two in MA before moving to GA so I can’t speak to long term success using that strategy in zone 6 or colder. I’m now in zone 6 MI and keep my ume in a cold room where it rarely falls much below freezing. I do plan on trying to ground grow here once I get a few more young trees to experiment with. I’d say try it if you’ve got some youngish stock you want to grow out.
