You're right. I've done that. Small cuttings for propagation are another story. The bigger trunks on collected trees have a lot more stored energy to push roots.
hi I went looking for answers on how to do this and your post showed up, would you mind sharing your method? Guidance on how to cut it, the proper measurements for the soil and sand method would be great
I'm new to propagating and unfortunately I don't have any oak seeds from my family's old tree which was cut down recently, red oak shumard.

So it's been a while and my cutting died. I didn't follow up because I kinda forgot the thread and life happened, oh well.
But anyway, I've had no succes with cuttings so acorns are way easier. I collected about 35 Quercus Palustris acorns and they all germinated. So now I've got 5 oak clumps in training lol. My general advice is to keep tabs on interesting oaks and collect acorns in the fall. It also can't hurt to try to air layer as well I guess. Good luck!

that's unfortunate Id still like to give it a try though, you don't remember the method you used at all? going shopping today and hoping to pick up some sand and pot mix at home depot today.

Sorry for the late reply. Sure, my method was to take a small semi hardwood cutting which I stuck in regular soil. I used a propagator and a growlight, no direct sun, misting frequently.

I have air layered a cork oak with success. I only tried it because I wanted to cut that part off anyways. I have had a lot of success with maple and American elm cuttings using 100 % vermiculite in a clear tote with a clear lid. I think if you use potting soil you have to worry about mold and disease.
