Projects from Harts Backyard

Wow nice bark, and the leaflets are wider than the ones I own/have seen. I've only seen one vitex with that kind of bark before, it was absolutely massive-- owner wasn't willing to sell.

Elms are nice, I started with a seiju similar to that and have made several really nice trees from it. Root cuttings, airlayers, regular cuttings- should be alot of fun, they develop quickly
If I happen to see another similar I’ll let ya know!

This is a Dark Knight Blue Mist spirea (Caryopteris clandonensis) . Drought tolerant, fast growing and heat loving. Bought it last year and it was just a twig. Now it’s a pencil. But hey, for one year, not bad. It’ll get uppotted next spring.CE2214F0-9E80-4E8C-A234-E4E531E30009.jpeg24611DAA-B74E-41E7-9DC3-9B87EFBAE202.jpeg

Here’s a few late season purchases that were cheap and took a chop.

This is a Procumbens Nana from Lowe’s. $28 I bought it because the trunk was much more substantial than any other nana I’ve seen at the big box stores. Just cleaned it up and jinned some branches. Will repot and wire next year.

Here is a viburnum tinus that I bought on clearance in august. It was only $12 so I figured if I chopped it hard and it died than oh well. It has responded quite well and I’m looking forward to it’s development. It’s not the most cold hardy plant and I’ll have to give it a decent amount of protection. Hoping I can get the leaves to reduce wel Its

Another nana. Bought this one last year and left it at my dads house. Half the tree died to its benefit!! Styled it this year and added a Jin and a Shari. It’s amazing how much the cambium around the Shari and Jin half bulged and have begun healing. Such a simple tree but fun for only $10. 49FF26B8-F67E-4759-8A48-C210884CD6E6.jpeg

After struggling for a bit, this snow mound spirea has pushed plenty of growth that is beginning to harden off. Plenty of time for winter hardiness. I’ll address the nursery can next spring. I’m liking the leaf size and node length already.

First repot of the year. A small Siberian elm root over rock that I want to stay small., so the rock isn’t completely swallowed soon. The roots grabbed the rock real well, but I still covered them up so the smaller of them will thicken and not dry out. I built the cage though with the thought I could unwrap mid to late summer. Siberian elm grow roots insanely fast. 9C6706D9-EA35-421F-AC0B-41B265B4225D.jpeg1DED8056-77D6-4ECE-9AC3-40A09B31AEE3.jpeg95F5CB2D-F289-4FDF-8578-BAD3548CA8F1.jpegF8E31B84-C3B4-4AF0-ADD2-0176C6E87C4A.jpeg

This tree survived the winter uncovered outside with no protection! I really like this little mame and can’t wait to clean up the roots and build vigor. Pics to come

I knew the low on this viburnum was 10 or so degrees but I still took my chance leaving it uncovered. 100% dead now. 😂

Root over, uh, cobra? Started this one quick last spring with 3 Siberian elm seedlings. One seedling died last summer. I’ll probably continue to add elms to balance out trunk calipers. I had this die cast model for almost 20 hrs as this was my dream car. Well, dreams die for some, and others dreams get buried in tree roots. I don’t have pics from last year, but will start documenting better till it deserves its own thread. 69576DB4-6DE1-474E-8CBC-F9095241F74B.jpeg86E57369-6F29-4312-A6AA-5490B23FC516.jpeg583CF0E6-B79A-46EF-9F8D-3781F58F1247.jpeg

Looooooove that root over Cobra!!!!
Thanks!! The third tree would have made it so much better too! I’m going to sneak more in here in the coming weeks. Maybe one more in the car and a few growing around it.

Thanks! Mid summer I started thinking the rock may be too small in 10/15 yrs. I had initially planned on up potting or even ground growing to increase the girth of the tree. Rather though, I’ll keep it in a small pot for it slide and keep the height short. It may be too big eventually, but not for a very long time!

Picked up a couple crape myrtles this week. $20 and $35. A Natchez and an Acoma. Decent trunks. The Natchez has a nice line already just needs cutting back to. Both will need trunk chop healing. The acoma is a little less clear. Repot at bud break coming next.
