Progressing American Bonsai

Ok... here is what I would like to see more of in America...
I would love to see more Shows, and even more competitions...
Now I know there are a lot... but I personally think there could be
more...

Seeing that I personally feel that one of the best ways to improve
one's trees, as well as skill and craftsmenship, is through competition...

And god knows we have plenty of competitiveness here at B-NUT...
:)

Two, of the competions I either am or will be taking place in are
the Of Bonsai Magazine Competition, (which I know is also open
to international) And the ABS New Talent Competition...

Anyone else planning to do so, or can recomend any other competitions
for folks to enter ???

I agree with this post wholehearted and thought this was the intended direction of this thread when I read the title. I for one think we have a lot to learn from the Europeans and especially the Japanese, but we need more time to get to that level. Competition can only help however and the artisans cup I believe will change our bonsai for the better in the years to come.

You are more than welcome to pack your doo dads and display in this years national Kazari. Pm me and I can forward you an entry form.

At the very least, you should make your way three hours north and see it first hand. It is quite impressive. Pictures do not do this justice.

I wish I could be there. We should start this sort of competition here on the East coast too.

I would love to see more Bonsai Artist here in America, doing
either tutorials and videos, or Blogs of what they are doing, and how they
are doing it... Like the videos of Graham Potter we are all familiar with.

Like what Brian Van Fleet has been doing here...
http://bonsainut.com/forums/showthread.php?10408-Updated-my-JBP-PDF
(I wonder if he will like my thread post more now ??? :))

Or Jason working on his tree, getting it ready for Epcot.
http://bonsainut.com/forums/showthread.php?10434-Here-at-Epcot

It is one thing to show a tree fully finished, or even at the beginning...
but another to see what has been done and or, how it was done !!!
I think folks learn alot this way, which progresses Bonsai in America.

A reminder that many of the bonsai professionals worked for five or more years as an apprentice, the first year pulling weeds and watering trees, sometimes cleaning toilets and other grunt work learning very little and not touching a tree. Then gradually progress to actually doing some work on trees 12 or more hours a day while still pulling weeds, picking up leaves, watering trees, getting yelled at, etc... with one day off a month. Then they come back to the US after all these years of dedication and do the best they can to earn a living in a country that is only beginning to appreciate the beauty of this art form. Let's not ask them to teach us for free.

If you are looking to enter a bonsai for competition, please consider the 4th U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition which will be held on September 13-14, 2014 in Rochester, New York. Everyone in the United States is welcome to submit photos of bonsai for the selection process.

If you don't have a bonsai which is ready yet for the U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition you are most welcome to attend and study over 200 museum quality bonsai, learn from lecture/demonstrations and visit the largest bonsai vending area in the country. More details later.

Bill

You what?

What a rediculous statement.

What I have done at my blog in four months represents thirty years of my life. I gave him ten years benifit of doubt.

What public contributions to bonsai have you done in the last four months?

What are you like an "Apprentice Groupie" or something ???

Do you follow them around taking notes of what they do on a day in
and day out basis ???

There are folks here in the US who are doing Bonsai professionally,
who have never even been to Japan... Some perhaps, only on vacation...

Is this now a requirement of being a Professional Bonsai artist in
the US ???

Sorry Al, I'm your fan, but her contribution has nothing to do with her questioning your post. That is bullying. You are supposed to be the bigger man here.

I'm no white knight, but wrong is wrong. People are people. And this makes me ill.

Maybe you didn't mean it the way I read it... Idk

I know you are dedicated, knowledgable, and have some really nice trees. You have put in years and work and so forth. No matter what you have accomplished there is no reason to have a bad attitude. I know on here it's sometimes hard to tell what someone's tone is.

You have been at it for a long time and have contributed a lot, but I don't see anyone else boasting and initiating a "pissing match" nearly as much. You have nothing to prove right? By the sound of your post you're the best bonsai artist in America, which would make your opinion matter in this thread that you are apparently too good for.

You're better than me, have done more than me, know more than me, and have more trees than me. Is that what you'd like to hear? I'm not afraid to admit it. Now try to be a little nicer :D

Thanks very much for posting this... as well as hosting the event !!!

I was discussing this yesterday, with a couple
of folks down here in Florida, who I believe just won last year in the Tropical
division, and one other, which slips my mind...

I personally can say that I will be submitting some trees for the selection process...
Also, would like to talk to you at a future time regarding possible Vending...
:)

I have noticed a problem with internet bonsai forums:
our ability to type greatly out-paces our trees abilities to grow.

the older folks have years of experience and pics to build their case and for newer folks there aint much to show...

If you look at the newest ten threads on the forum, the ones about trees rarely get to their second page of replies while threads like this..... well why am I still typing?

I can see why people with the real dirt credentials hold their keys. and have attitude

Read back....the pissing match started here at post 81

Now post some worth reading ...
:)

If you feel "I" initiated that then read all the posts from the beginning and get back to me. My response is purly defensive. My contributions to these forums are many...no one tells me to post something worth reading......

...But I see your point...I will crawl back to by bunker now...I can see I have nothing to contribute to this group.

Of course, I am only Joking...

By the way, I think you mean post #61 ...

Bill, your venue is definitely helping the US in making stronger bonsai. It's my goal to have a tree accepted one day, and with this achievement in everyone's mind I hope that others use it as motivation to improve their skills and trees too. I may hopefully have something ready to be there by who knows, 2020? Ha at earliest.

You distract from the point. I am sure every bonsai professional domestic taught or not paid dearly in either sweat, time or money for their level of expertise. Yet you blaze ahead and ask for more detailed photos / blogs from these individuals. How about buy Bill's magazine, or Bonsai Focus. Or invest in Kinbon. Or get in your car or fly and work with one of these individuals rather than ask for more free stuff from them.

Kind regards,
Darth

Makes no difference when you get there... as long as you get there...

There is a TON of information available on the Internet for free. Even on YouTube alone. This the Information Age. I have learned a lot reading and listening to professionals on the Internet. Nothing beats hands on experience but lots of information is available. I'm greatfull for this.

I can see I have nothing to contribute to this group.

You have a lot to contribute, if you wish to. If not, I don't blame you. I'm not looking for a lesson but a discussion is nice even if it meanders and comes to no conclusion. It's cool to see the entire spectrum.

In twenty or thirty years, if I'm still alive, I will still be growing trees. Probably some good ones, like you.
