Preparing for wintering plants indoors -

That jack chain is real inexpensive by the foot at hardware stores and home depot. Open a link and hang like I did in the second picture. The chain is just opened wider at the bottom to hold in the light keyholes... With moisture and such I myself would not use a "sticky" solution. ;)

I'm sure your way is much better. I'll just do that. Was trying to avoid asking my husband for help, so he didn't notice the sudden influx of trees;).

I've pretty much accepted the fact that my trees are going to have mites this year. The grow room is too big to really clean every crevice, so I'll just have to continuously treat the trees. I've got the two LEDs up and running, and will probably end up using that T5 as well.

Hang a thing called a no pest strip in the room. It's made by Raid I believe. It will kill every bug in there.
I had mites on one of the snakes I brought in to where I kept my reptiles. It was a 2 car garage. Hung one of those babies up and everything but reptiles was dead in 3 days.
Spiders, beetles, flies but most importantly the mites were gone.

Does anyone treat their trees with insecticides before bringing them indoors? Mine are all happy and growing well, so I probably won't end up treating them. I've got bugs inside anyways

I probably will this year considering the scale infestation I had last time. Ive also been battling spider mites on the junipers this summer so I wasnt to treat against those before bringing the trops in. Ill probably put them in the garage, spray them with some stronger stuff and leave them in there a day or two before moving them inside. Once inside I only treat them with an alcohol + soap mixture.

I'm new, so I'm sure my opinion doesn't mean much. But, I've already sprayed mine with an insecticide from work once, and will do so again before they come in for the winter. Kills all bugs, with no harm to the trees. Lost a couple of favorites to scale, before I knew about it.

I use a systemic spray and add a systemic granular to the substrate surface a day before moving them in as I said in a previous post here. Also - I strongly suggest you at least fog that room with the spray I recommended - perhaps more then once... It does not stain and is odorless - can't ask for more on the cheap honest.

I apply a systemic (bayer) once or twice before bringing them in, and will also spray the foliage with water several times and possibly oil once before bringing them in. Also visually inspect to look for existing populations of scale in particular, that has been the biggest issue I've faced with tropicals indoors.

Step one finished....

Going down to 51 Deg F tonight and 49 tomorrow night. We have had cool, cloudy days for a week and a half. Probably gona get visited by Matthew this weekend or early next week. I wont have time or the energy to do the dance if we have to scramble in preparation for that so I've moved all my trops inside for the winter. I didnt get a chance to spray them but Ill keep an eye on them and do the soap and alcohol mix if I need to.

Same boat here, I moved all but one inside early in preparation for Matthew. I dont want to scramble or stress either.

I've never had an issue with pests of any kind before, so I dont spray anything. Probably jinxed myself saying that...

The "scramble" would be to secure other things if needs be that would leave the trees as lower priority. A couple of boats worth many thousands would be higher on the list than a few trees worth a few hundred.

I've moved the majority of my trees under lights. Believe it or not, there's still about 8 more that need to fit in here, including two huge guys. Obviously I need to sell some to make room ;)

They look pretty healthy! Mine will be coming in next week. Gotta get everything ready.

Yeah, they typically are for the first month or so

Since the trees were on the ground, a lot of the roots escaped through the drainage holes in the pots and grew down into the ground.

I had mine in for a few days in the high 40's, then back out, this week has been in the 80's. I think I can make it 1 more week. Last year I only had 4 and no lights. This year, thanks to this forum, quite a few more, and lights to get up.

Shoot, send me $500 and it's yours! lol
If I didn't literally just get a white pine
I would love to, just gotta get that much first!hahaha:p but it'll be cold by then:oops:
Maybe if your still trying to get rid of it next year!

To Ryan and all...do you think that cleaning and desin(s)fecting of winter storage room is necessary? I can't believe the insect is waiting all the season, when the room is empty, to attack the trees brought in. Thank you.
