I saw a few raw Hinoki cypress at my local nursery this week that would be great for shohin, but I wasn't sure which cultivar to choose. The three varieties I saw were Kosteri, Butterball, and Fernspray.

I definitely prefer the dark green Kosteri and Fernspray foliage more than the Butterball's yellow.

I'm leaning towards the Fernspray, just because I haven't seen it as often in different nurseries, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't a bad choice.

Sometimes the fancy named cultivars we find in nurseries are the least compatible and the most difficult to make into a bonsai.

I would go with the Kosteri because it is the most versatile of the bunch. The fernspray has an odd foliage pattern and upright branching pattern. You might be able to make a decent formal upright with the fernspray, if you can find a nice straight trunk.

Or take a trip up to Plant City Bonsai in Clermont, GA.

Thanks for the input! I'll probably pick up a Kosteri later on in the week.

I do love heading up to Plant City Bonsai, but with a brand new 2-month old baby it's been difficult to schedule an afternoon trip!
