cut the ground layer back and wired the next trunk section. wired it to the left at first and almost died. going to the right is much better. took some wire off a cutting, too.

Thanks for the follow ups on these. I have two I want to layer for better roots myself. Any reason you started yours in fall? I was thinking of starting mine now.

i was just experimenting when i started the first one in fall. seemed to work good so i tried it again just for kicks and it worked great. I'm going to try one this spring too, so i guess we'll see how it goes.
 
That makes sense. Thanks for the reply and appreciate all your project posts. Maybe I'll make a thread for my two eleagnus air layers too.
 
took these cuttings in april in coco/perlite and it looks like most of them rooted

i thought they were originally from asia and an invasive species where im at in the southern US. you'll have to look up your area and see what cultivar you have around there.

defoliated last years leaves on this mother tree and wired up for future airlayers. only up-potting from now on.

I finally got my air layer to take and potted up a few weeks ago. What kind of beetle??

I imagine one of these as a "finished" bonsai with the little fruits would be awesome. I think I've seen one or two online

look like asian ambrosia beetles

last year they attacked a pot bound zelkova that was about a medium size finger thick
