Here's a cotoneastor which self seeded in a pot under larger garden shrub, grown for a couple of years. Last year I was pretty happy with it as a small bonsai- not very refined but the overall size was about right, it flowered and produced two fruits. I plan to now cut it back to start building branches in the most suitable places with some ramification- clip and grow.

Here's a quick virtual of what my pruning plans are for the spring. The first branch has a sub branch which terminates with the leaf retained on the right image, the blue line shows where I might keep that second branch, pruned in a similar fashion. I might- probably- as well keep the lower thinner branch growing parallel (rear) of that branch.

Thanks, any thoughts appreciated- on pot choice as well as pruning- I was thinking a shallow oval would be a better choice.
I'm not bothered about a thicker trunk for this bonsai or I would have already been growing it in the ground. They're fun material cotos.

Cheers.

Good story!

On such a tiny guy, I would consider leaving the smaller branches.

Nice start!
