Pinus Strobus

Vance,
Was the base on this ewp intentionally buried at some point?
Tx, lynn
Greetings Ms. Lynn,
Not necessarily: the tree was probably about 20yrs of age when gathered in N. Michigan. It was growing in fairly sandy soil and the top had been knocked off due to snow plow effect...hah! The lower branch you see is even further distressed simply because during the early years it was placed behind my garage during winter sleep and (of course!) the DTE lines were directly above. What with an ice storm the lines came down and the fine DTE gents trampled it further...LOL! I managed to save the branch with a wire wrap for a few years...
That was probably was in the mid 90's when the tree was not really considered bonsai material I just couldn't give it up...(I have earlier photos enclosed 2001P.Strobus01.JPG when it looked like a bush!).....
What with today, the tree is finally coming into its own....but I have continued to lift it a tad to show those roots. Strobus create massive roots in the pot! Average white Spring growth (underground) root diameter is about 5mm.

Lovely progression. Love how you take species that are considered inferior material for bonsai (eg pinus strobus, eastern red cedar, etc) and are able to turn them into show-worthy bonsai. Too bad the national show got cancelled this year.

trampled it further..

Sir, your perseverance is unmatched!

You are an inspiration.

I wish I'd have talked to you more in Michigan.

Glad you are here to share with!

Vance, your erc and ewp are inspirational to me and the reason I dont neglect species just because others say they dont make worthy specimens.

How do you treat the first flush of growth in the spring on this tree? Do you candle cut the first candles from bottom to top as well on first flush, or only second flush?

Really Nice to see a strobus like thise. Hope One day mine will be half as good as thise one😊
