Long overdue follow-up..How's the tree? Bedded in for winter?
My thoughts are based on what you have said regarding the amount of work. I would say patience. I agree whole heartedly with @0soyoung and @Leo in N E Illinois . I know you are concerned with the taper, but anything that would be problematic would take much longer to develop and you will be able to address before them. You did nearly a full bare root. The rootball is less than you thought it would be. You already removed foliage and this is a single flush conifer. This trunk line is great and has potential to be special. I've got a mugo is the same boat. I'm going slow to ensure it had the energy it needs. I think you should do the same. Give it one more year and feed it good. A couple of mine that I was patient on and I allowed to build energy for future with rewarded my forbearance. You have a sound plan. Stick with it. My two cents.Long overdue follow-up..
@LCD35, I put it up close to the house in an area that is blocked off from the wind. We had such a wet winter I did not want to bury it in deep mulch with the others, and kept a close eye on its watering needs. I felt tentative about the lack of cold protection but put faith in the species and experience of others. I think our lowest lows were something like 17, 7, 14 F* from October-February.
I started getting a bit worried wondering when or if it would wake up over the past couple of weeks...we’ve had a bit of an early spring, though evidently this one is not the first one to the party -it just started about a week ago in sync with the hackberry. The color of the new growth is so vibrant, not sure images can do it justice.
I’m just going to stick with the plan and leave it alone for the year getting it healthy; however, it’s already got me thinking...and where the trunk splits into three creating inverse taper, I really would love to cut back to two....
Thoughts..? Leave it alone right?
Prior work -getting it into the box and cutback was definitely not subtle.
Thanks

I think you replied to the wrong thread. Before I leave for the night...one last thing. There are about 10-12 that ‘look’ fairly good when it comes to appearance, potential. If I can find a big enough training pot would it be fine to plant them all together or would a group of _# be better for now with the idea of combining them all together in the future? Any thoughts on dimensions...especially depth of training pot? 5-6” or deeper?
Oh I know I did!!!I think you replied to the wrong thread.
