Page filling ads, not cool

I just checked all the ad settings, and they are unchanged. This pop-up ad should not be happening (at least based on current ad settings). I am going to do some software maintenance that may require me to take the site offline for a few minutes now and then.

I need to see the text that comes up when you mouse over the ad - but don't click on it. What is the link that shows up?

Google enabled pop-up "vignette" ads back in December, but they are not turned on for this site, and I just checked all the Google ad settings, and they are definitely turned off. Google should not be serving pop-up ads to the site.

I even checked the ad revenues bonsainut receives by ad unit... and the site is not getting paid for pop-up ads that show up on the site. So who is? That is why I need to see the text that comes up when you mouse over the pop-up link - buried in that long string of characters is the publisher ID for who is getting paid for the ad.

I got one this morning when I logged in on my PC at work. (Apparently, I'm not too busy right now,)

I checked all the server files. There is no installed malware, and the site files are all updated to current versions. I think the key is to find out who is getting paid for the ads. And if my publisher ID is in those pop-up ad links, I am going to have to take it up with Google on two levels (1) those ads should be turned off and (2) they aren't giving us any revenue for the ads that should be turned off... but they are still sending.

Four different types of ads for the site... which I haven't changed in quite some time. All are display ads (no pop-ups). All are responsive ads that fit into frames on the web pages (in different locations). It's a mystery... that we will solve.

This is extremely frustrating. I've got the site open on my PC, two phones and a tablet. I'm logging in and out, clearing the cache, and I can't get any pop-ups.

Without clicking the links, when you mouse over the ad, you should be able to see the actual web link that it will take you to. Does the link start with:

https://www.googleadservices.com/ ?

If so, what does it say afterwards? If someone can get a screenshot of the link - even if it is a photo of the screen - that would be extremely helpful. It will be a ton of characters.

Ah man. The link does start with this, but then it's a bunch of random characters and symbols after that.

Yup I actively avoid coming to the site on my phone now because there is an ad every other post in every thread and I just dont have the time to scroll through all that to read something

Just had it happen again.........

It happens in every second other thread or so, not consistently.
I can't seem to reproduce it. By opening a bunch of random threads. But I will upload a URL if it happens again.

ISP's over here are bound to strict EU laws so there's no way of them injecting ads, these ads seem to load after the threads themselves.. Just like the ads on top of the pages do. So the load order is consistent with the google ads.

Maybe they're time-based; every couple minutes a full page ad shows and then it goes dormant for x time. Illegal movie sites do this a lot to not scare visitors away.

I had this one now, and I don't even like apples.
Couldn't see the link on my phone.

This is the exact ad that's been showing up on a regular basis through the normal ads on the site.
I think google is involved, because it's the same stuff that they serve on the rest of the site.

Still an issue, just clicked on a thread and received an add.
Had to close the bonsai nut site to clear the add.

thanks

Ok the plot thickens. That is my publisher ID. So at least we know it isn't some sort of adware / malware. Google is serving pop-up ads to the site under my publisher ID even though they are not supposed to. Who knows where the revenue is going(?)

I am going to contact Google and see if I can straighten things out.

Strange that they should just start showing up out of the blue.
