Thanks for that advice! I signed up with ABAS and going to their repotting workshop on the 11th. It’ll be my first one. Are you a member? I’ll definitely save for something nice to get from that show.

Five years of proper development can make a huge difference in the quality of young promising material. Five years with poor material is mostly wasted.
My bias is showing. Why waste time on poor material?

I agree, it is logic, but when you start Bonsai, when you are a beginner, you don't know what tree has potential or not. You often just focus on the trunk diameter but not on the tapper, the nebari or the branches. When i look at old pictures of my 1rst trees, i can say that my tastes/preferencies have changed ^^

We just picked up a couple of 18' maples from a nursery for about $300 per tree.

you mean 45 cm tall ?
In France, you can get those JM (50 - 90cm tall) for 35 to 80€ depending on the size ->

18' is eighteen feet, which is somewhere between five and six meters.
