Hi there
Joined a couple or so days ago and working out how to post here has taken me a bit of time. Been a while since use.

Initially I was looking for "New Members Introduce Yourself Here" tab but nothing found... except this part of the forum. So here goes...

I'm in the SW UK, county of Somerset. I've a variety of trees in different stages of development towards Bonsai. Began back in/around 1992~95 with a Crabapple, root over rock Trident Maple and small Acer palmatum forest group. Added to these with a Field Maple and English elms, yew and others.

Although I still have these I took a break from keeping up with their management for Bonsai because of other Life commitments, Falconry and other life happenings. Planted them up in garden containers and trimmed back now and then...

Retired from full-time employment back in 2017 (January) and got back to Bonsai in late 2018. Small garden... pretty much taken up with the variety of trees of saplings from seed germinated in 2020, Zelkova serrata, Japanese maple (from Sango Kaku seed) to the 1st trees from back in 1992~95.

First attempt at airlayers in 2019, English/European Hawthorn, successful, just - 2 of. Next attempt in 2020 on with a number of Japanese Maples (11) from the trees from back in 1992~95, Field Maple (2), Japanese Hawthorn (2), Trident Maple (2). The 11 Maples went into a forest group this spring of 2023.

Now trying to decide what to do with the remaining unsold Zelkova and JM saplings and looking towards preparing for the coming winter as autumn has begun with some of my trees although entering the second week of September and in a heat wave after a poor August.

Welcome, whilst I'm relatively new to bonsai at around 2 years, the site has been a wealth of information. I very rarely post but had to say hi from North somerset, UK
Thank you 🙂. Probably not that far away but I'm kinda close to the Wiltshire border... Somerset is a big county for the UK 😉

Welcome Aboard to Bonsai Nut! We sincerely hope you enjoy being a member of the forum!

It sounds like you’ve got a nice grasp of the hobby. Good job. Falconry… now that sounds really interesting.

We do a lot of propagation here. Sometime wintering over is the best option for left over material. Also gives us a chance to practice on the extra stock.

Wondering if you’ve thought of joining the Somerset Bonsai Club? It’s the very best way to sell off excess stock in our club. It appears their next meeting is the 13th.

cheers

Thank you DSD. I hope that I do also - if I can find my way round the many areas 😉.

Falconry... yes. Long story short... 15 yrs old, books in local library then my own. 1st falcon 27th September 1972 when 21½... Continuing to 2012 with various hawks over the time. Member of a number of falconry clubs. Hand injuries meant having to give up. Long time, 42+ years.

Clubs and memberships... thought about... and get the UKBA newsletters after a brief meeting at the Bonsai Boot Sale at Southwick in 2022.

At 72+ I'm not one for travelling and especially late night driving coming home from club meetings. Did lots of that with the Falconry clubs. Keep looking at the Bonsai clubs around me for those closest... I'll check the SBC link further - thanks for putting it forward 👍

Wasn't expecting to get so many of the seeds germinate - nor receive more than the packs said when bought in 2019. Was going to try selling at the Bonsai Boot Sale this year - at Staverton instead of Southwick - but it was cancelled. Hence why I've a few left. A beginner in the true sense with the propagation from seed 😉.

Would have added to my opening post but seems an OP can't be edited... 🙂
Posts can't be edited after 30 minutes. However if you need me to edit something, just mention me in a thread @Bonsai Nut and I will come take care of it :)

Just to note, Bristol Bonsai Society is probably closer (knowing the geography) and meet in failand Link went to my first meeting and their annual show last month, great group of people

Thanks... I just wanted to add the Ginko image after coming across it. Would have been more in with the introduction posted. I'll keep your information in mind should I slip again 🙂👍

Thanks, I hear you. I’m of an age too. Been diving for 51 years and not looking forward to laying down the tanks.

Sure but please count the wins. There are a lot of folks here that haven’t been able to propagate as well as you have. Being too successful is a positive side of bonsai

Cheers
