New to Bonsai from NJ

If the wind catches those tarps it may flip the plants you are using to hold the tarps down.
CW

They held fine. Those pots were about 50lbs each and the benches held the other side down nicely. It wasnt going to be too winsy that night, so it was really just for a little extra protection. I do see your point though, so ill try and get some lawn stakes or bebt rebar or something as a secondary option to hold them down.

Wow, that's some nice spacey back garden, sweet, i wish European standard is that size :) i fortunate enought to have a descent size but still compares with yours.....
I mixed up a days from weather forecast(i thought it was going to be Monday/Tuesday night ), we got some light frost this morning - it was 0.2 Celcius at 6am :)
Havens been out yet but will go shortly to check, i hope all is good, i recently took out some plants from greenhouse as it was nearly like a summer, i hope they are ok. Also i planted 2 apple and plum tree in our back garden :D and fingers crossed.

I have some apple trees planned for my yard and peach trees. Havent decided on what type yet though. I do have a few I started from seed though which I plan to use as pollinator trees. Will see what happens.

My yard is a nice size for a suburban american yard in central nj. I think its because I am in a much older house built prior to the 50's expansion of the suburbs. The yard was one reason we loved the property so much.

Europe does have small yards, but you have beautiful cities and landmarks. Something we dont have a huge amount of.

Nice nice, same here, our house is on old estate build in 70s and we are fortunate to have a huge back garden, and it was a reason we like the house so much, before we had it like 2x3m or something like that.
Now they would build at least 2 houses +gardens on the same land :)
It was frosty again, i hope thats the last breath of winter, im planing to repot my ficus and place it permanently in the greenhouse :)
Have a good one!

Our house was built in 1903. My parents always had a yard, but it was about 1/3 of what we have. It was only the third house we looked at but we loved it.

Looking like some decent spring growth on this little three tree clump of pitch pines
20200505_195327.jpg

Some lodgepole pine seedlings which look healthy.
20200505_195334.jpg

Some Redbud seedlings. Going to see how these do. Leaves are verrry small right now.

Northeastern Hemlock seedlings. Seeds collected by my house in PA.
20200505_195346.jpg

Some more hemlock and a single Larch which sprouted from a small amount of seed from a very old larch I found on a hike in PA. Really happy to have had something sprout from those seeds.

The colors on the new leaves from this oak are wild. Never seed such bright red new growth on oak. This is a white pine...

This is oak collected same area... these sprouted pure green. The leaves are really beautiful and tiny.

My American elm leafed out too... in the span of one day it. Love the leaves on this. This was a 2 or 3yr old collected sapling.

Post Pt 2...

Osage oranges leafing out. All the Osage Oranges survived no problem. Have 3 or 4 of them.

Mugo looks healthy. The candles are looking super bright and healthy.

All my pitch pine seedlings are looking very healthy also. All of them lived. Really hardy trees. Some of them have 5 or 6 candles extending.

Viburnum I am messing with. This grew from a cutting no problem!

My only Shimpaku. Not sure what to do with it stylistically. It was wired low and in a clump so I wired it a little more vertically. No plans yet so ideas are welcome.

All for now.

Other than an old thread by @cbroad, havent seen anyone else mention Koelreuteria Paniculata or Golden Rain Tree so I decided to give a bunch of collected seeds a shot and well looky here...

Probably going to be a crap tree because of the compound leaves, but then again, arent those brazilian rain trees ever popular??

Koelreuteria Paniculata
I've learned to not let it escape its pot... I've got root runners now a few feet away from the tree.

I kind of gave up on it becoming a bonsai because of the compound leaves. It now has a pretty substantial trunk, so maybe the foliage will be more into scale...? I'm not really sure what I'll do with mine.

It's in a squat 10gal. pot and about 15 feet tall. As far as just being a landscape tree, they're pretty cool, but for bonsai, I don't know...

Interesting about the runners. I'm going to keep this in a pot so hopefully the confinement will reduce the leaf size. Sounds like yours grew quite quickly and added girth at a decent rate. Are you aware of anyone else that has tried to work with this tree?

You have very nice collection there! Here is your bug ID: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/harlequin-bug-vegetables

If I am not mistaken, @Forsoothe! has a decent Koelreuteria paniculata . Maybe he will comment with tips.
I've collected saplings from a local one and had some growing on for some years, but I sold them off before they got to bonsai stage. They didn't grow fast enough for me to pursue it. They are hardy in the landscape, but rarely locally. I like the leaf, but they were always spindly for me in a pot in-spite of the fact that they are not big trees in the landscape. Sorry, not much help here.

All good information. Thanks!
