New Kiln

This Baby Kiln doesn't have a thread yet, so I'm sneaking this in here, since I kinda tested/am testing that firing schedule.

Started at 1:30PMish, I was into 212F by 2:30PM and at 450F by 3PM, so I cranked it and have been averaging 500F/hr. I was at 1600F by 4:15ish, so I figured if I took till 5PM to reach 1650F, I could just make sure it doesn't stall too long there, before bouncing it up. Trying to stay at 60F/hr till 1850F. Then it'll be a lot more of this!20201228_155844.jpg

That was a dried ficus leaf!

Going to woodstoke from 1900F up to Cone 6 up top, hopefully no hotter than 9 at the bottom.

I have pieces to break to check for carbon coring, so I'll report back tomorrow with the details!

Smells good though!

Looking forward to it!

I had to get over the sadness of losing the feet on this one. I torched the "S" out of the bottom shelves and, though you're supposed to be able to fire on freshly washed shelves, I think the fact that I also painted the feet with alumina wax and fired so fast made the shelf hold the feet firmly as the rest shrank.

That Soribe!

Reduced Side, the one good foot!

So close!

That Soribe is something else. The speckles are wonderful. Will have to steal that recipe while you sleep

You know what was a game changer for me was shelling out for Advancer kiln shelves. You will never break a foot or worry about glaze drips again, or have to mess around with kiln wash. worth every damn cent. buy them.

I was going to order them, until I heard stories of them cracking in outdoor gas kilns. Something about the sandwiched post areas retaining heat, that makes them crack ....cuz they don't have enough kyanite! Lol. They actually talked me out of spending the extra...$5-800, so I was easily convinced.

Shout out to them Boys in Minnesota!

I can only speak for myself, but I've done 25 or so cone 10 firings with my Advancers and I have the flame hitting right on it with no problems. No warps, no kiln wash, and no sticking. I store my shelves indoors so they don't absorb moisture. I also candle for a few hours so everything is ~300F when the firing starts and I let everything cool over a ~12hr period.

@AZbonsai Update? I been thinking about this KILN!

@NaoTK glazy.

On Red. Slight wood reduction. I think it bubbled odd cuz it was a refire, could use better placement too. 3rd times the charm! At least this one is useable with feet!

Beautiful! Does that glaze have a lot of whiting and/or barium?

I use 9 whiting cuz the .5 bothers me!

I only used 2 bentonite, though I have 50lbs, where someone in Florida couldn't find any according to my supplier. They paid for shipping 100lbs! So of you need Bentonite.....I have a lifetime supply! (Unless you're bathing in it)

I think the key to the blue crystals like this is the more refractory mason stain I use instead of cobalt. This last one was fired 18 hours, and cooled in like 7. Slow cooling makes other crystals, which I don't really get.

Haha I just bought a 100 pound bag of bentonite this morning.

The bubbling is caused by the whiting decomposing to CO2 right at the peak of your fire. Swap it out with wollastonite and recalculate to pull back slightly on the silica. Make sure you sieve the wollastonite are it will leave huge chunks on your pot.

I think the crystals are actually caused by the 5g of EPK causing copper metal to nucleate (if it has copper.) Try one small batch without the EPK to test.

I was just reading about the math for a whiting wollastonite swap! (google doesn't know how to spell wollastonite.)

I watched it bubble from around 1500F to About 2100F, it settled down almost completely by the time my 6 was falling, so I thought it may heal fully. Most popped and remelted again, a handful stayed really thinly bubbled.

I think I may double the epk instead of testing without!

I fuzzed my info on Glazy, this is actually 2 Mediterranean Blue Mason Stain and 1 Black Copper.

Introducing the "DAG" pot. A Dad-Abby-Grace creation (my daughters :). 42 in total. We are making these for the 3rd & 4th graders at our Summer Bonsai Academy. 5th grade going to make their own. Kids will get to glaze. Will put a portulacaria in it to take home. Will detail how we put these together when I get some time!
