I collected this boxwood early this spring. It has been doing quite well through root trimming, potting and some initial trimming. I'd like to try to get into an "oak" style but as I look at it tonight it appears to me that it may have too many branches co ming out of the crotch of the tree. The trunk is approximately 2.25 inches wide and yes as it sits in the pot the trunk is short. I'm looking for some input, comments and constructive advice. Thanks for the help.20180825_183337.jpg u20180825_183255.jpghi

I wonder if losing the left most...or right most trunks only may help kill the flare going up.

Seems all the trunks have great close forks...

Tough decision....
But it looks like it wants to bud in close for you!

Nice.

I would lose the right most trunk to give the main trunk a more "independent" appearance. If that makes sense...lol just a personal preference

Sorry for the double photo. Have problems doing things on my phone.
I took another look and decided that the original photos didn't fully represent the tree. Here are photos from all four sides.

The last photo I removed the branch on the far right of the original photo. It is a different angle but shows what removing that branch might do.

Anymore opinions?

Thanks

Jamie

I much prefer it without the branch. I actually really enjoy the overall shape of this tree

right of the original photo

Is that also the left one in the first photo here?

Looks great!

I'd love to see you get the canopy in farther.

If you look at the big photo above with the "3" on the front of the pot it is the left branching group that comes off the bottom of the trunk. Guess I'd try to make that a "hollow".
I wanted to get the trunk and main branches worked out first then work on the canopy. Trunk is about 2.5 inches so I was assuming that this should be about a 10" to 12" tree.
Would you agree with that?
Source do you like the tree with the branch gone? Last thumbnail marked "edited" when you put mouse over the photo.
Let me know.
Thanks
Jamie

Yeah...that branch should go..it makes it look like a boxwood shrub!

I don't follow a width/height ratio so I probly don't agree...I think that is a silly "rule" to follow...since you can have a 2.5in trunk base up to 12in.
Or a 2.5in trunk that tapers to 0in at 12in.
And with how many branches?
And do those branches taper?

Better to follow...
keep each next segment between 1/3rd and 2/3rd as thick...and between 1/3rd and 2/3rd as long.

Your 2 subtrunks are of good length and taper. Stout. Kinda masculine.

Then you got all that which is all doing agreeable things except for that orange marked one....it's straight section is as long as the main trunk.....

I'd want to get the green started on this wood within the white.....and keep the outline...."believable".

So it's been 6 years and I haven't done a thing with this bush. Work & life just didn't leave time. Now that I'm retired I think I will have more time. Of course only time will tell, we never know. Below I have photos of all four sides of the bush. It hasn't changed as far as the eye can see.

Making plans for next Spring I'm thinking about removing the far right branch on side 2. This will help the trunk be enlongated a bit & simplify things. Then at the same time reduce all of the upright branches to their first leaves.

Vote to remove branch?

Reduce uprights?
