Nanpu-Kai bonsai show 2009

.. It was a yard tree 8 ft tall then it was air layered 6 yrs ago ..... enjoy. peter

Hi Peter, congratulation on the air-layering then. It is almost impossible to air-layer an oak tree! I tried and failed twice. How long did it take to root? It should have a great nebari in a few more years. The air-layered trees tend to have good nebari that is nice and flat.
Good luck!

Can you name all the Nanpu Kai members from the picture.

peter macasieb

No I can't. There are some older persons in the back row that I don't know. It seems like the club is getting smaller every year! Did Nanpu-Kai lose anybody recently? Did Harry Hirao get an award plaque? He deserves one. He is the nicest human being period. Artistry wise, I think Leila Kusume is the best artist around. That olive stump of her is pretty good. Thanks for sharing the pictures with us. Makes me want to go outside and work on my trees some more.

The last picture is the current members of Nanpu Kai + 5 members not present...

Wow, being part of that accomplished group must be a great honor for you. One day, you can show the picture to your grandkids, and say that you've been part of bonsai history in California.

I know almost all the names, but not quite. It would be great if you list all the names, in the order they stand on the picture, and then the missing one. This way we can learn the names of all the members.

Also Cheryl Manning is has a great artistic touch.

You are right! I forgot. She had some trainings in Japan a long time ago right? I never had the pleasure of seeing her bonsai collection. It is a shame we don't have more ladies in this hobby, in general. It seems like such a male dominated field.

Hey Si Nguyen

When it comes to artistry, don't forget Tak Shimazu & David Nguy. Can anyone tell me how to put "Originally Posted by Si Nguyen" in my quote box?

Hi J.C., Yeah those guys are ok too. Hell, they are all pretty good in that club.
What's a "quote box"?
Si

I like it too. Very unique. It reminds me of a startled cat.

I was wondering what the heck you mean by the "startled cat", but when I took a second look, I could see exactly why you said that.

It's a very interesting and unusual black pine. The great thing about it is that one would never design such a one-sided pine on purpose. But the author of this bonsai (maybe Shig Mya) was "listening to the tree" and went along whith the design that the tree suggested. That's why is so original.

Thank you Ang3lfir3, I feel so much smarter now. What they didn't tell me was I need to click "quote" on the original post. I owe you now, let me know if I can return the favor.

1st and 3rd trees are olive. Their leaves are so small! Bonhe

what is the effective way to reduce olive leaves?

because some olives have 1-2 inches long leaf

thanks

It depends on the specimen. However, if you keep pruning the branches, it will help to reduce the leaf size. One of my friends told me that I can water the tree with the beer once a week to reduce the leaf size! but I never tried it! ;-)
