Just bought a lemon tree when should I repot it into a shorter pot. It is blossoming right now should I defoliate and repot? Now or wait till summer?

My Meyer lemon is also blooming. I wouldn't do anything until summer when it's outside and growing strong. I repotted mine when I got it this summer. I did not see any reason to defoliate. Mine is just a patio plant, not bonsai. I just like the flowers.

I agree with @Carol 83
I would wait until spring, after it is warm enough for it to be outdoors for the late spring and summer. Do your repotting and hard pruning all the same day. For Lancaster, PA, probably middle of May would be a good time for this.

Generally, I do not think defoliation is a good idea for citrus. Pruning for ramification will get you smaller foliage over time, it might take a few years.

If you do want to defoliate, only remove maybe 50% of the leaves at a time. I'd start with the largest leaves. Don't do this very often. It will weaken the tree.

I did not repot it though thought I would wait till spring

Just in case someone wants to know it is a Meyers Lemon Tree. I bought at a local nursery.
