IMG_1042.JPG IMG_1044.JPG IMG_1045.JPG Myself and @parhamr headed up into the wilds of the great northwest yesterday to do some tree hunting. While trekking through some of the most inhospitable terrain I have ever encountered, we found some awesome trees and had a very good, although exhausting time. Today I built a few grow boxes and got three of my five new additions potted up and into their home for the next few years. The first and third I believe are noble fir, and the second is a limber pine. Bringing back the one in the first picture almost ended me, but it's a spectacular tree.

Here are some pictures of the area we were IMG_0998.JPG IMG_1003.JPG IMG_1014.JPG IMG_1018.JPG IMG_1020.JPG IMG_1033.JPG collecting in. It was truly unlike anywhere I have ever been, like a moonscape, and I plan on making this an annual trip. The species variety is somewhat limited, but the trees are spectacular, and with a lot of hard work very good rootballs can be obtained.

Looks like the old cascades. Cool region.

I just re-read my OP and realized I wrote limber pine instead of lodgepole pine, pinus contorta, for the second tree.

Beautiful place. How long is the walk from the car?

We made four trips in and back out to the van, scouting a different area each time. I would say we went about a half to one mile each way per trip. The area we were in is about 9 by 12 miles with no trails or road access inside. Only access roads on two edges, so an impossible area to cover completely.
