My First Real Yamadori

That is some of the best rmj foliage I have seen. Also, did you see the one in the black plastic container in the conifer green house at NE Bonsai? It is $300 and worth it. It is a very rough tree. It needs a ton of work. It is kind of leaning over the side like a cascade.

Hmm I don't remember that one right now but I'm sure if I saw it I would. I haven't been to the nursery that much this year because I have been so busy so it's possible I might have missed it. Is it an RMJ?

I'll be up there in late November......with a mini-van;). Leave one or two for me, please.

Tom, RMJs are like potato chips.......you can't have just one:). Yours is looking pretty good and I hope it continues to do well for you.

I have class Nov. 30th, when are you coming up? If I keep this one thriving i can see more in my future.

Yes, it is a rmj.

Yes, fantastic foliage for a RMJ. And I see a lot of scale foliage. I bet it'll only be a yr Tom before you can work it...I also have a new RMJ, which also has some pretty good foliage, but only has 40-50% scale. This one I know will be at least 2 yrs, just collected in 2012. And I know how incredibly hard it is to wait to work a piece of material that you love, have the design in mind, but the material isn't ready.

Anyway, really cool tree! ;)

Well so far so good on this one. I think I found another possibility for a front as well.

I like that front, too. I think that front has the live vein coming out of the soil and up along the right side of the deadwood trunk, right? Great looking foliage...I'm jealous:o.

Thanks Dave, and apologies for the bad background on the pics, I need to work on that. This front shows more movement, and it leans towards the viewer. We will see I guess.

Very nice Tom! Can't wait to see it styled. I love RMJs!! The only thing wrong that I see with this tree is that is not in my garden! :D

Thanks Mach, I can't wait to style it as well. I need to study it a lot more before I'm ready though.

Just saw this thread! That's a really nice find Tom! Superb foliage for a RMJ.

Whoever did the repotting of this tree did a good job. I would copy everything about it. That's a whole new thread by itself.

I don't see any fertilizer cakes on this pot though. Why not? You should fertilize it a lot, but go organic. It will seem to respond faster on chemical fertilizers but it will weaken in the long term.

How do you water this tree?

Hi Si, good questions. I thought I put some fertilizer pellets on all my trees at the end of the summer but I can't remember if I put some on this one. You're right, the soil looks empty of fert.

I have watered from the foliage and then hit the base quickly with a watering wand.

I'm curious on your take of the repot?

Probably the best option yet. Thanks again Rob.

The tree grew well this year and I think it will be ready for some initial styling next year if I figure out the direction I want to take it. The foliage is a little more leggy but still nice.
