My first American Hornbeam

Did it ever grow, or did it die at some other point? I just collected two Hornbeams and am curious about their durability.

Greeting, I have an American hornbeam that I have had for several years, they are very durable and hardy growers. Here is the thread on mine: https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/american-elm.23366/. The thread title says American Elm, but I was told wrong when it was given to me, it is actually a hornbeam.

I think there are somewhere in the range of 6-7 million voles living on my 1 acre lot. I have big wire boxes to protect my favorite trees but literally everything that was not in one of those boxes was eaten this winter except for pines.

Damn! How many trees are you left with?

Sorry to hear that, Mike. Those voles sure do give you fits, worse that squirrels for me!
I'm getting a handle on the little buggers.

That blows. I wonder why they didn't eat the pines? 2 years ago they ate every type of tree I had except for tamaracks.
They're like the ticks
Since our winters aren't as harsh as they used to be (global warming) pest populations don't get knocked back in winter like they used to.
There are so many deer around here lately the D.N.R. is having hunters go out at night to hunt them.
Nature is way out of balance.

You guys done lost more than $300 worth of material.

I wouldn't even be fucking around with those little bastards.

If you can't bring the hammer down....

Put the trees up.

Put the trees up.
Then they die.
They need the earth warmth to keep them alive when it's below zero.
If it was as simple as keeping them off the ground they would just stay on the benches.
Heat tape?
You're kidding right?
More electricity for an already over the top electric bill.
Wires all over.
We get power outages quite regularly here too.
So the trees freeze.
I'll stick with what I have.
It works well. I did get a little vole action this winter,my hawthorn got chewed on some and my amur maple. The hawthorn is my girdled so it will grow.
The amur? Who cares?
They found a small hole in the wall and got in.
Killed them and plugged the hole.
I got less than $30.00 into my set up.

My current system with the cages work but I can only fit so many in it. Natures way of thinning down my collection every year.

I remember you saying that you lost Pines. Oddly they left my ground growing Scots and Jack pines and ate every single ground growing Tamarack.

I've seen whole clumps of white pine ate up in the wild too.

Are voles only a winter time problem? My trees are laying in the mulch around my patio.

Yes. They tunnel in under the snow so you don't know they're there until the snow melts.
By then it's too late.
I lost over 100 trees 3 winters ago to voles. The final tally was 137 I believe.
