Hello !
Ive got a mugo pine and it was in a wooden box in the corner of the garden and i pulled it up from its spot to inspect it....

One side of the tree has died and also that side of the roots rotted off and the trunk all soft on that side.
Now that doesnt have to be a problem but im a bit worried tough with the dead roots on one half of the pot with the Rain season comming up i wonder if it is going to give problems....
The part that is stil alive looks realy healthy
So i am thinking of energency repot it into a pond basket and the sort of half bare root it or well remove the half of the dead rootbase i dont expect frost yet but maybe next month some night frost but i can shelter it on colder nights.
Id like some toughts/opinions on this.

pine looks healthy. A rotting trunk usually has been dead a long time. So I see no urgency.

That being said.. I repotted a sylvestris last night; The roots were in full growth mode. Hundreds of white tips. So much so, I will be repotting my other pines that need repotting this week.

Yes that side has been dead for a while but it was overgrown by some ground cover plants so i think it might have stayed to wet on the back side for a long period..
The wooden box falling appart so i might just slip pot it into a pond basket and do a propper repot next summer.
Thnx for the info !

Its in a pond basket now.
When i pulled it out of the wooden box my concern showed to be right the side with dead trunk was full of dead rottn roots so cleared that out and planted it in the pond basket good sign right below the dead part under ground new roots formed on the live/death area.
For now shade spot and move it in the shed if the forecast says nightfrost
If it lives ill let it get back on strength next season and then some day in the future ill wire and style it i got something in mind already

Heathy roots present too though?

I think you need to get a Yew in perfect helth to keep you over winter.

Great job - I've would have just left it and did it late winter as Pines can handle dead wood like a champ - just make sure you treat the wood if it already at the rotting stage

Its not high on my list of things to do but... maybe I should pick one up just as a reminder... It cant be worse than the 36pack of Boxer my friend brought over for $19.99.
