You may still prefer grafts, but I read and heard Bloodgood roots well and grows well on its own roots

Man I'm so jealous, I wish I could have some JM in my front yard, they would toast to a crisp in a day with the weather here.
You can never have enough of those if the conditions to grow them are perfect...JM hoarder
Which nursery was the commercial one by Charlotte? Inquiring minds would like to know.It is common practice, though not universal, to sell trees when they have just been up-potted. I don't agree with the practice, but some nurseries do it. However many nurseries I have been to will up-pot their trees, and then set them aside for several months in a "not for sale" area to allow them to recover.
If I am buying online looking for a cultivar, I usually don't care as long as the tree is healthy and matches the size description. If I am buying pre-bonsai, I typically won't buy it without a photo - because the $$$ usually warrants it.
Where I get upset is when I receive a cultivar that doesn't look anything like what it supposed to look like. I just bought ten large landscape JM from Costco earlier this year. They had brand new sale tags on them that labeled them as "Bloodgoods", but a number of them had ripped off growers tags in the pots that identified them as "Red Emperor". I still bought them, but because I no longer trust what cultivar they are, I will be planting them separately from my known Bloodgoods. (They don't look similar, but who knows?) I was at a different commercial nursery down by Charlotte and they had a shipment of trees that were also labeled "Bloodgoods". Two in the shipment had the same tags... but they had green leaves, LOL! The nursery sold them to me at half price because they said it was "clearly a mistake". So I will have quite a few generic JM in my landscape![]()

I recently bought 2 of their 3gal JBP's that were in great shape, but I don't believe they were the ones to propagate these hence the better health of the trees.Came across this while searching the forums due to a recent order myself. I'll echo OP's sentiment that Mr. Maple is not my fave. They're not terrible, but you get way bigger/better quality trees from most other respected online retailers. I've had a couple gallon size that were so small as to be disrespectful. Def shouldn't have been up-potted. Problem is, they are often the only ones with the varieties I'm after. Recently got a couple JBPs that appear to have needle cast, we'll see how/whether they rectify the situation. Both the JBPs and the azaleas I got from them were certainly on the small side, but appropriately sized for "gallon" containers.
