I was listening to the radio and they said the most expensive hobby (in terms of total annual expenditure) is neither vintage car nor art collecting. It is gardening.

I wonder if bonsai is counted as part of it. :D

Does that just mean that a lot of people garden ? Misleading statistic ?

I think the most costly hobby is Old men chasing Young Women. I look at hobbies and their applied cost on the basis of the individuals expenses not the over all expense of a single activity.

I think the study was done more with total economic impact in mind.

I believe individual hobby wise, art collecting tops the chart. Considering that big part of it is not recorded/underground transactions...it must be way ahead of the pack.

with 35 years of experience in Koi, I can tell you it's the most expensive.

I'm being drawn to suiseki, more and more. Doesn't need to be fed heated etc :)

LOL. I am thinking of that too. NO; watering, fertilizing, cold protection, sun protection, etc. I can even make my own daiza. Hmmm.... :D

Is this a culturally accepted hobby here in the USA? If so, maybe getting old won't be so bad after all...:p Ahh, who am I kidding...I can barely afford the hobby I have now:o.

In my experience, the most expensive hobby is collecting trophy wives.

Look at it like leasing a car. Sure you pay more, but every few years you trade it in and get the new model.

Folks used to say...why buy a cow when you can get the choice cuts by the pound when you want them for a lot less. Wise saying I'd say esp since you usually cannot even get a slice when you want some when you own the cow! ;) LOL

They may be looking at total aggregate expenditures for the entire industry. On a per person level, the one that HAS to be near the top is boating.

AND you're old. Just ask your kid.

My buddy made a bunch of money in real estate early on. Rather his wife did. His chosen hobby was learning to fly. Now they take short trips to the beach on a whim.

Now THAT'S an expensive way to get your kicks. Planes and fuel ain't cheap, no matter who you know.

I own a salt water aquarium store. It pays me well. I know a lot of people drop tons into the saltwater hobby.
