Mame Willow Leaf Ficus

Its going to be a cascade. I have actually wired the main trunk line down since the last pics were taken.

Im not following you. You know ficus so i will definitely listen to you.. Please explain.

Rick

If you're going for a cascade you should plant it as a cascade should be planted. There is no purpose for it to be positioned in the pot the way it is. It's planting angle now won't necessarily hurt anything, but it just doesn't serve a purpose to be planted how it is. Styling it would be easier if planted in a cascade position.

So tilt to the left when i repot next time. It was in a small pot and i put it in this one to thicken the trunk up a little more.

Also this tree was just re potted in july..kinda hesitant on repotting now

Rick

Going to be moving this tree over to the cascade section as plans have changed for this tree

I would let it grow for this season...
I'd like to link one very interesting article compiled from the IBC thread by britishshohinbonsai https://britishshohinbonsai.com/supporters-area/articles/ficus-in-the-cold-north/

... here is the original thread with Qs & As:

It's a very interesting reading how to grow figs for bonsai even in not favorable environment.

Its not going to be a mame anymore although i might be able to keep it shohin

Rick
It doesn't really matter Rick. It could also go in the tropicals forum or even general discussion.

Find a cool stone with a shape that you could use to your advantage. Or just wait until next year and pot it into something where you can, "let it hang":D:D:D:D

Its not hurting it in the pot its in until next year. Still want the trunk bigger, so it can stay there for the winter. I do have a cascade pot, but its to big for the tree.

Rick

nice ficus.

for quicker results, let the apex ESCAPE. for a 1 inch trunk apex or branch needs to exyend 5 or more feet. Easy in Texas heat, you have 6 months of summer heat left (just kidding, but you will be hot thru October)

Our nights here are already dropping into upper 50's F (13 C) at night.I've already brought inside ficus I want to keep growing fast.

It already has a 1 inch trunk under the soil, I'm just letting it grow and see what happens. At night I plan in moving mine into the garage, but as soon as temps go back up when the sun comes up they go back outside for the day.

Anyone know what causes tips on leaves to turn gray, almost as if someone set the tips on fire to burn.

Rick

Black tips is usually root rot, too much water maybe? Soil is to retentive?

They are not black, they are a ash color almost like someone took a lighter and burnt the tips. This tree was repotted this year in some very course soil drainage is not a issue. Thanks for your comment. My other willow leaf had the same thing also, the cascade had one leaf, the informal upright had 2 leaves with it and its not the whole leaf, just the tips.
