Leather’s WIPs

First up: Norman the Blue Atlas Cedar.
Winter 2022: partial soil replacement. And a big old chop on the top. He might live, he might not.
1.1” thick
Full sun
Possible future: semi-cascade? There’s a big chunk of rootstock lurking below the surface, he most likely won’t survive the removal.

Juniper
Acquired Spring 2023
Future plans: tanuki?
I’ve got a cool piece of driftwood in the garage I can mess with over the winter and Spring 2024, I’ll attach this whip. The bonsaify video about tanuki cracked me up and rang true. So we’ll see!

After realizing my growing space is, at best, part shade, it’s time to move away from full sun species.
Camellia japonicus “Unryu”
Plans: grow this puppy out BIG. The leaves are large and I believe the flowers are too. Tin foil is covering my attempt to air layer off the current top. If that is successful, I have ideas about a possible root graft…maybe.

Azalea, ‘Flame Creeper’
Acquired Spring 2023
Raft style, max height 12”, max width…who knows!
Letting it bloom this year to get an idea on flower size, then a repot into kanuma.

Last but not least Carpinus Carolinia “Wisconsin Red”.
Acquired from a non profit tree farm spring 2023.
No idea what I’ll with this. I think it’s grafted so maybe air layers?

Carpinus grow well from cuttings so the bend you see as a graft may just be the new terminal shoot from a hardwood cutting. Photo not clear enough to do more than guess.
Most non profits here grow their own trees so you could ask the nursery how this one was propagated.

Dug over the holiday weekend. First up, common juniper from the meditation garden of a master gardener. Port Orchard, WA. Planted between 1980-2010. Packed in pumice. Building a DIY humidity tent. Misting 3 times a day, getting 1-2 hours direct sun right now. IMG_3803.jpegIMG_3805.jpeg

Unknown azalea from same space. Small, white hose-in-hose flowers. Had just finished blooming so I’m hopeful. 1 hour morning sun right now. In its native dirt. IMG_3806.jpegIMG_3807.jpeg

Common juniper. 1 month post collection. Pop up green house and misters. Had some dieback which is expected. Indirect sun only. Had a record low temp for June so a heat mat is under there.IMG_3848.jpeg

this is a keen bit of self-awareness that I think is tough for a lot of people but it should lend itself useful. It's like the opposite of folks who want to grow tropicals outside of the tropics, gotta play to the strengths of your situation.

what's the name of the farm?

Pacifica Farms in Oregon. If I was to order from there again, I would purchase something younger and pick upon person.
