Larch forest on lace rock no. 1

Starting this thread for Larch forest on lace rock .. I have 9-11 larches I’m pairing for a forest . They were larches I acquired along the way. Today I finished assembling the lace rock , I drilled holes down 2 inches , using a tile drill bit spraying water carefully , then used wire and fishing anchors to hammer into the holes to secure. Used 3-4 anchors in each , hammering in with a fine metal point end of a drill bit. Will be using moss / moss mix/ sphagnum as top dressing , a few water tolerant ferns .. it will be enclosed with muck walls

Looks great so far . I’m curious what you mean by the term Lace rock . Unfamiliar to me . Where did you get it .

Forest looks very nice . Great to see the use of pre trained trees in a forest . watch you don’t get muck on your fishing reels . if you don’t mind what did you use for a muck recipe

What is lace Rock?


Lace Rock is a very well-known volcanic rock that is widely used in freshwater and saltwater aquariums as well as terrariums and bonsai tree arrangements. This highly porous rock is excellent for cultivating beneficial bacteria in aquariums.

After a day outside and a good soaking from the rain , I’m starting to bud out. The muck is holding up good even after heavy saturation , it flexes when rehydrated and firms up when dry.

Added moss to one side , other side is still bare but I used screens to sure up the one side and prevent birds from taking the sphagnum that washes away from muck. I’ll just use a ground top dressing with ground up collected moss. I really hate how I spaced these trees every days but I’ll let it grow for two years to make some changes to the left two and bring closer , and move the right side closer together

I understand that Lace Rock brings pH up quite a bit in aquariums but not sure what it might do with bonsai trees.

A lot of the needles on this particular tree in the grouping are opening up , some buds left to push still , but there seems to be a bit of pale needles or buds ? Has anyone seen this is this transplant shock? I’ve been keeping this inside only nights where frost is a concern
