yeah, maybe that's just how they look under your current daily light integral. i checked the camera and mine get full sun from about 8am to 3pm, then shaded by a big tree till sunset.

The metal grill you use is cattle fencing? If not, what is it? I need something slightly sturdy that can pass light through to build a temporary setup here at the apartment. I am running out of floor space and was considering some cement blocks and 2x8 planks, but your setup looks 10 times better than what a plank of wood would and would allow me to place trees underneath it without blocking too much light.

it's just all different kinds of safety fencing. we just put up some Uline wire panels last weekend at work. when they get too messed up or decommissioned, i take them and cut out pieces, etc. they come painted, powder coated, and plastic dipped. should give you a better idea of what to search for.
these wire shelves you find at Walmart are nice too. 90 beans for a 7 footer i think it is. the poles screw together so you can make two short shelves or one tall one. i plan on getting quite a few more of them.

I am using one of those outside, and one for my tropicals. I I may go that route if I can't find some Uline at a decent price. I am limited to 18" deep and need to cover 12'.

Great progression @Darth Masiah I just purchased my first kotohime and trying to figure out how to work with it compared to other cultivars, so this is really helpful.
Quick question -- what is your thinking around the cluster of branches emerging all around the top cut on trunk in the last picture? Are you leaving them to help heal the wound? Are you concerned with swelling in the area with so many shoots or do shoots not thicken that fast in kotohime?

this tree is very strong, so shoots are definitely going to thicken fast. after a lot of root work, shoots wont push out as much and most of the time they'll just focus on setting buds for the next growing season. should start pushing hard the next year, though. as you can see from this tree, they can heal pretty large wounds fairly quickly. I'm thinking the swell from the little clumps around the chop should be just right by fall when I'll go in and thin them down to one and wire/cut back. i want the next section of trunk along with maybe two or three banches coming from around the chop for secondary trunk/branch lines and healing. then I'll dig out the middle of the chop to have a smooth transition into the next trunk section and whatever branching i want to keep close by.

i think ill get in there this weekend and reduce those whorls down to one or two on the big guy. with this root mass i kind of figured it would throw multi foot shoots out.
i also might reduce the sacrifices a lot on these five year old cuttings to take advantage of the fast healing during the growing season. next spring i wanted to repot into a training pot and reduce one or two of them down to the main trunk line and work on the next section of trunk.

after heavy root pruning in spring last year, the above 5yr old didn't really push out any growth like usual. the poofs were all healthy, and it set big buds, this year all the buds are trying to extend. strongest are about 5cm. on one of the other 5yr olds the strongest shoots have hit 10cm already. this plant has always extended growth if the roots were healthy. im in zone 8a weather. i don't protect these in winter and sometimes the tips die. doesn't bother them. feeding on average every week to two weeks, 2g a gallon 20/20/20. microbe/kelp mix every month. water everyday, twice in summer with this inorganic substrate.

chopped another 5yr old. my favorite cutting from post #193 is going untouched this year to thicken up the most.
