Sorce, our local clay was used to make Chicago common bricks. The pinkish bricks you see on the back of the older buildings in Chicago.
There were some clay deposits on the north side that made a yellowish/brown brick you see on some of the older buildings on the north side.

a few suggestions -
[1] Know what type of clay you are using ------- earthenware or stoneware.
[2] Know that even stoneware will crack if the soil freezes with water in it.
[3] Know that a porous clay pot is still considered more healthy for a tree.
[a] This why for natives [ eg. Japan ] they are buried in earth outdoors, with
a covering of decaying leaf mold [ gives of heat ]
Or placed in an unheated room.
[4] We stayed with a simple soil because certain trees, need porous pots to
wick away the extra water.
Example -------- the Chinese Serissa, loves to be watered, but soil cannot stay
wet. A porous pot [ at the bottom ] answers this problem.
If this is a potential career change, know that there is Pottery Science.
If you are just having fun, I wish you well.

That is a huge undertaking...making a pot for that large of a list! I am not sure I know of a pot size just yet. You mentioned you envisioned a pot glaze for my ginkgo...it's going into a training pot... 12" or so BVF suggested a size. That is a lot of clay...I don't expect a pot that large. I do get they shrink with baking. (From what Sonny said when he was doing a commissioned pot for my wisteria) let me look at my trees...those accent pots the one with the cigarette looked sweet. Curious what glaze you will do on it. Keep at it you are on to something by what I am seeing!

I only have one bougainvillea. He's pretty much home in a pot. You are kind...but, you will receive funds for your time and money trust me. You can not just give away your pots!!! Though I get your incentive...but that is a long list. Much clay=$$$ spent out of pocket. I Understand we are not to steal ones blessings. But...that list is long. Overwhelmingly so...At least allow ones to pay you your cost if not a bit more. Now...if I do something with that knee root. Maybe a pot for it? Depends on if I go with a ROR or exposed root. Or if anything can be done with it. But it's a project without shoes so to speak. Let me see what spring brings. It would be a smaller pot for sure... My Chinese quince has years left in its current pot to build ramification. So it would be a waist to go that route...If nothing else...an accent pot if I do nothing with the root. Your heart is pure gold...but your time is also valuable also.

And then the unknown and hard to control variables that go on in drying and firing.
Building green ware is less than half there and as soon as there is pressure to finish a couple commissions, let alone 4, the shit hits the fan a bucket full at a time.
I've only fired a little over 1500lbs of clay in 4 different kilns in three studios under two pros and I have a long road and a short list ahead of me.
REALITY, it's not my favorite word in this sport.

@sorce hey bro, great project. I like your greenware so far. I'll have to commission you for something. Don't know what right now. Ginkgo, elm, persimmon, all will eventually need pots, but I have a hundred or so pots on my shelves waiting for the right tree, so I'll commission you for the one that nothing fits.

Never too old I say, would love more myself but been told I'm a bleeder so have to ween the booze down for a few weeks in advance, Seems like a hassle.
This is why I haven't ventured into buying a kiln yet, the bloody breaker trips if we run the AC and oven at the same time plus the way they do electric here is you are limited by wire size to how much power you can actually draw.
Any ideas if you could run a kiln on solar?
Could be a solution.

glad I did, kinda wish I diddnt. Having about 70% coverage makes me a target for conversation. I hide most of them when I can, not that they are bad or i regret them just dont care for the attention. When summer hits and I wear t shirts and shorts cause its too hot for turtle necks, I mean mug, kinda like resting bitch face only I'm not a bitch.... that helps keep the small talk at bay

Don't know the issue, but I believe the magazine was Ceramic Review.
He might have used a Fresnel Lens. Heated an iron bar in a small kin and
the heat given off fired the objects to stoneware.
Also see Youtube, some folk doing work with a Fresenel lens.
Remember also we can make clays from 850 to 983 deg.C vitreous
and glazes from 750 to 900 deg c. durable.
Time has moved on.
See Richard Behrens ------- look for his Egyptian Paste and try it.
Books are on Amazon, not too much. Around $5.00 and $7.00 US

I learned fast that most homes especially newer homes don't have what it takes to reach cone ten. Now with a brand new set of elements you will get away with it, but after a few burns they are back to pulling hard amps, just breaking over 60 around 2225 -2250

I don't have my kilns at home anymore, I'm in a old industrial building with 3 phase and 120 amps of 220 volt.
Another major variable is how tight you pack the kiln. We want to pack them as tight as possible to get more done in a burn, but you are dragging efficiency down big time making the burn longer and making it necessary to hold your temp longer for saturation.
This is where thick shelves and furniture can wreck your amperage.
