It could have been cracked for some time and the outer most layer of bark finally gave way under the stress stretch. I think it been there awhile hidden by a bark layer....and recently busted open. I don't think this was a...just happened...type of injury because of the ample heal over in progress.

Did you have a recent freeze and thaw? Bark can split from a quick swing in temperature.

I can assure you no harm was done. I found out while misting a couple days ago. How could have happened ?

It is an old injury that looks to be about a year old. You can see how the sides of the wound are already closing over the sapwood. Notice how the trunk right there appears swollen? You can injure a trunk and not know it for months... until the bark falls away and there it is. It might have had something to do with that branch stub, or it could have been unrelated. It almost looks like a stress fracture on the outside of a bend.

Yep! That's an old injury.

But juniper bark does form little cracks and becomes flaky.

Yup...an old wound that is healing. No worries...it's doing what it needs to do. To correct itself. My juniper had either a wound...or was chewed on by a chipmunk or squirrel. That area is completely healed over now. If anything if it doesn't completely heal and leaves a scar. It's considered Shari. It adds character to the trunk...not a bad thing either. ;) Some actually add it for character.

No sir. Winter wasn't that bad here in Houston. I kept the juniper outside throughout the winter. No problems.

Well, if it's healing, I can't be more than happy !

Last spring I traded for an uncommon Chinese elm cultivar. When I got it in the mail, I potted it up in good soil and waited for it to bud. It budded very late, and the tree was really weak. I couldn't tell what was wrong. I babied it all summer and it slowly regained its strength. Late in the summer, I noticed that part of the bark at the base of the trunk was peeling away from the tree. I pulled it off, and revealed a trunk wound that wrapped around at least half of the trunk and was about four or five times the trunk width in length. It looked just like your wound but much worse - but it was already healing.

As of this spring, it is almost closed up.
