Paul there is not a bad front in any of the pics, looks like a nice candidate for a drum pot. If I were you I would pick some lucky guy from Ohio and send them the plant, think of the nice feeling it would give you ...

photo #1 seems to show off the best basal interest and makes it most interesting to me--plus the upper regions seem like they would be straight forward to wire, The lowest branch may abort but if you can keep it I would definitely aggressively and dramatically wire it down and give it some sexiness. My plan would be to leave this branch along and strengthen it and later when the upper has been wired out and recovered--just before a good upper hair cut--in early summer, I would ascend on it brutally then let it grow out again while keeping the top in check. I love these upright junipers and I would shoot for a geriatric irregular upright tree of wonder.

It's easier to help if we can see the tree. The background is pretty busy and hides branch placement, etc.

But for me, I THINK #3 might be best. Shoot them again with a blank wall as the background.

Jin above the first branch. Bring first branch closer and design.

Or, pick a lucky guy in Illinois!

I would agree about the multiple front idea and I agree with shooting them again with a good back ground and from eye level. A bonsai should be photographed with the edge of the pot being horizontal, obviously, but many don't concern themselves with this issue. From the photos point of view, the back edge of the pot should just peek a little above the front edge to provide a little visual depth to the photo.

This is the way most finished trees are displayed and if you want a real accurate idea of what is happening with this tree as far as bonsai is concerned, you should photo from this angle not above as you have done. You have to remember; your eye is a photo device that is powered by the most powerful and sophisticated piece of soft ware in the world-----the human brain. What is lacking in a photo the brain makes up for, many times furnishing material that's not there; but a digital chip only understands light and on and off.

Paul, it looks af if the previous owner planned on pic 4 as the front, and was growing the top out to be wired down. The top of the foliage would be where the V of the jins meet. The jobs are too heavy, need to be carved down. Could be a good use for all that wire you're getting from Gremel!

Other possibility is to graft Kishu down low and make a shohin out of it. I'm thinking pic 1, turned more to the left as the front.
