JBP From Seed For The 1st Time - the force is not strong in this one

Thanks for the updates, certainly giving me some direction/guidance. I sowed 150 seeds earlier this spring with about 66% germination rate.

I’ve ready the Bonsai Today article, SL Pine Book, and the Bonsai Tonight article on seedling cuttings but have a question - what is a reasonable indicator that seedlings arrow ready for cutting? I want to give myself the best opportunity for success

Love the progress

I've been cutting when the center needles are are about grown out, but the candle hasn't started extending yet, and the stem starts turning reddish brown and hardening off. you can see the needle length i usually cut at on the four examples below that all lived.

checking the roots on this 2+ yr old i had put in a cylinder in post #32. wired it again trying to set up some halfway decent movement. this was a runt seedling i didn't cut.

going to step up my cutting game next spring. that perfect 360 root base is achievable
extra nutes to promote rooting
a tote for humidity and tray/insert for airflow
perlite/vermiculite for better rooting in seedlings than bonsai mix. might add a little coco coir

i wanted to try popping and cutting some jbp seedlings in a more controlled environment indoors this spring. one of my second hand drivers in my veg tent went out, so i figured it was the perfect time to upgrade. i like the internode shortening properties of a more blue spectrum, so i bought a QB288v2 Bspec board from HLG, a driver, and a dimmer. everything else came out the closet stash 😁 two cuts for a rectangle, a little drilling and tapping later, and voila!
