Anthocyanin, a red pigment, is generated to shade the photosystems from damage caused by too much light. Hence, a shade adapted tree that can, will produce anthocyanins when placed in full sun. Do this in Sep/Oct and most acer palmatums will produce anthocyanins and will display brilliant red colors in fall.I have been experimenting with this maple in the past couple of years by placing it under different light intensities. It has been very responsive and can dramatically change its autumn color depending on how much light it has received during the growing season.
Aside from the wonderful color, I can't believe what great shape the delicate leaves are in, they still look perfect!
Forgive me if you already stated, how much direct sun did this receive daily? and then i assume shade the rest of the day?
Yummy!!! Scar at the bole healing nicely!!

Incredible tree. Nothing special at the begining. I like how the idea was born and then executed. Now it's one inspirational tree. Bravo.
