Japanese maple #5 progression

WOW, so much Great information!
Thanks for taking the time to share this.

I have been experimenting with this maple in the past couple of years by placing it under different light intensities. It has been very responsive and can dramatically change its autumn color depending on how much light it has received during the growing season. I have not yet been able to manipulate a tree's autumn coloration to the degree I have with this maple. This year it was once again placed in the same exact spot, under the same lighting conditions achieving the same yellow I have gotten in the past. It is a much welcomed color in my garden since most other Japanese maples tend to color up in more typical shades of red.

The maple was photographed yesterday, November 6 as its color peaked.

For comparison, here is a much older photo of the same tree (before the second trunk graft) displaying a more typical, albeit beautiful, autumn bright red. That year the tree had received considerably more direct sunlight.

Aside from the wonderful color, I can't believe what great shape the delicate leaves are in, they still look perfect!

Forgive me if you already stated, how much direct sun did this receive daily? and then i assume shade the rest of the day?

Anthocyanin, a red pigment, is generated to shade the photosystems from damage caused by too much light. Hence, a shade adapted tree that can, will produce anthocyanins when placed in full sun. Do this in Sep/Oct and most acer palmatums will produce anthocyanins and will display brilliant red colors in fall.

Bri, this maple was placed on a specific spot under the arbor. It received dappled sunlight starting at around noon for the rest of the day never getting direct sun for any period of time. If I were to place this tree under a few hours of direct sunlight next year, it will almost certainly color up bright red in autumn.

Yummy!!! Scar at the bole healing nicely!!
Killa'!!!!!!!!

Lance, the keyhole shaped scar is now completely healed. It finally did about 4 years ago. If this tree was to be shown, I would need to lightly sand and/or scrape some of the scar bark tissue to blend it with the rest of the trunk. Otherwise it will all blend together with time.

Incredible tree. Nothing special at the begining. I like how the idea was born and then executed. Now it's one inspirational tree. Bravo.
