That would make a great photo if the coyote wasn't dead. I never really understood killing coyotes and wolves. Are coyotes classified as vermin in Michigan?
Yes. There is no limit and the season is year round. Here, they spread disease and are predators that attack domestic pets and farm animals. Last summer a pack attacked and killed one of my neighbor's calves. They chewed its face off but didn't eat the rest of it. And they did it in the middle of the day. Most likely, it was a teaching exercise for the juveniles in the pack. They are pretty but they are dangerous and deadly and their population is growing at a dramatic rate. 20 years ago they were not that common. Now, they saturate this area and you see them hunting in the middle of the day and and hear them howling in your yard at night. You can ignore them, but keep in mind that they aren't going to ignore you.

They are incredible at adapting to changing environments. I know they are increasing their population in major cities like Chicago and Toronto. In Ontario, and probably Michigan they have had hybridization between Algonquin wolves and coyotes. This creates larger more capable hunters. I will admit though that I love my wild spaces, and hope we don't repeat the mistakes of older generations. Predators are an integral part of healthy ecosystems, but we often demonize them. I guess I just hope we can balance our wants with the needs of our wild spaces.

Coyote hunting has been legal for a long time now, and the numbers are increasing not decreasing. There is no threat of eradication. I live in the country in an area that has largely been unchanged for my entire lifetime (50 years if you ask my mil). Coyotes are not moving in, they are multiplying. I'm reasonably confident that the wild spaces near me don't need more coyotes.

Let's stop this discussion, and return to bonsai. I'm not interested in debating/discussing these issues in this thread. You can raise the topic in the Tea House, and it can be discussed there.

Meanwhile, I am requesting that a moderator delete every hunting related post in this thread. That should clean up the topic.

@Wilson

Did you read this post from Don?

I have a bunch of coyotes frequenting my property and harassing me. Sometimes they surround me and bark as I walk out of the woods at night. Its a little unnerving at times, especially since the pack leader is big like a german shepherd. They've been hunting me and I don't like that very much. Sooner or later its going to get ugly.

Thats pretty damn scary.
I understand what youre saying but if hes got a pack surrounding his property and acting aggressive toward humans, I cant blame him for wanting to protect himself and his family.

Wildlife has a place and I think humans should make sure there is a place for wildlife. However that does not include coming into communities and killing humans for prey IMO. Theres plenty of things out in the woods like deer and rabbits for them to eat.

Per usual, awesome trees for great prices. If I weren't closing on a house mid January I would be in the mix.

One of these days I'm gonna pull the trigger on one of your trees Don.

Thank you.

Waltron how many coyote do you harvest each year? And where in southern MI are you located?

not nearly enough. im down here in the country about 10 miles south of ann arbor. I have quite a few hunting properties in the area, I've only been averaging 2 during deer season for the last 3 years, this year I got 3, 2 not in deer season, I have many stories and validations for my reasons of eliminating them any chance I get, like for instance the young deer I found in the woods this year that had its foot chewed off and its butt eaten out while it was still alive, and I found the deer still alive obviously us hunters are far more aware of the situation than non hunters, and that's ok becasue they just dont understand, honestly between me and my hunting buddies, a coyote kill is a very respectable one, they are very smart and illusive and somewhat difficult to hunt, more than deer even. sorry for taking the thread off topic. glad to know you are a fellow hunter, ready to educate people who have mis-guided conceptions about the topic. I'm definitely more inclined to support your business now that I know that, also a fan of your trees in general before I knew you were a hunter.

How much is an estimate on shipping to Canada? Really fantastic trees :)
