Hey everyone,

I’m located in West Bend, Iowa. I recently planted a Scots pine in a hollowed-out lava rock, and I love the way it turned out. I’d like to replicate this with more trees, but I’m having a hard time sourcing large, hollowed-out lava rocks at a reasonable price.

Does anyone have recommendations for where to find good-quality lava rock for rock plantings? I’m open to places that ship, as I don’t have a great local source. Also, if anyone has experience with other types of rock for this style, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks in advance!

Check with local aquarium stores...particularly ones that specialize in aquascaping. Search for Lace rock...it is a volcanic stone from Utah that is often used in aquariums and serves very well for rock plantings...significantly more natural looking that carved lava rock.

here are a couple examples I've put together... these stones are completely natural...no carving
