Was given this ilex, tree was in a bonsai pot but was removed and placed in a nursery pit right before I got it, that nursery pot arrived broken, yet the root ball in the initial soil was intact.

Plan was to place it in bonsai pot and maybe just remove a bit of soil at the edges. Yet it didn't fit the pot and I had to take out a lot of soil and release many roots. I'd say I bare rooted around 40 percent. Its early winter here and although our winter is a very moderate one (down to 4-5 degrees Celsius on the coldest days usually and maybe couple days at 1-2 degrees Celsius) should I protect it from winter?

Now the base is nice on this tree but the top isn't good at all, wonder if I can get something out of it still or just use it as a plant maybe. I got some.info.on another thread that the foliage isn't the best for bonsai so I'm aware of that. Yet how would you handle this tree if you wanted to make it a bonsai. The nicest front has the branches behind each others and the other sides lose the base which is the nice thing about this tree. How would u style it ? And is it ok to style (remove few bad branches and wore few branches as it was just reported out of perfect time frame ?
