ID this please?

I was going by the type of growth and the sizes Gail quoted. The one I showed is roughly 1/2 the size but they both have the same characteristics. An Engelmann and most any Spruce Tree would be very unusual at 3 feet wide and 18 inches tall because of the top growth habits. The Bird's Nest however grows like a shrub, short and wide. At 3 feet wide that one is most likely 10 or so years old.

I hear you, but I was thinking "native" and there are all kinds of examples of individual western spruces that look like this and are collected by bonsai folks
Andy Smith has Black hills spruce on his web page that look pretty much like the one in the picture, tiny needles and compact growth.
Also there's this

I just assumed too much about the photo.

This is not an unusual size for the Birds Nest Spruce, or one of the other dwarf cultivars. I have a Bird's nest Spruce in the landscape that has been there for over thirty years. It is currently 24" tall and ablou 36" wide. It would be wider than that but I have cut it back a couple of times.

Yes, that is the tree I was referencing. All my reading has them listed to surviving -15 F.

You still may want to Winter it in a shed or garage the first year to acclimate it from the grower. I have a tiny one growing indoors for now and they are interesting indeed. You probably know they are considered very invasive but if not - keep it potted ;)

I was planning on putting them in the ground. Guess it really depends on what they look like and the size.
