So I picked up this crepe myrtle. Looks kinda like a volcano with flowing lava. I think I'll call it Vesuvius.

This is prob the better front - decent taper up top - lots of branching to cut back to a tighter line

Perfect candidate for a Fairy Tale style tree- impressive but not necessarily a classic look. I dig it. I'd droop those branches down dramatically and make it look all spooky.

I think you need to come up with a plan for the nebari before you worry about a trunk line. You should probably consider what the tree would look like if you removed that one massive surface root.

Some might disagree, but I think that you will never have a decent bonsai when you have a surface root that dominates your design like that.
