Huangshan pine from seed

By the way, I like to share this Huangshan pine with you. One of my friends sent me this picture. He told me that this tree was collected from the mountain. I love it.

Nice, I’ve found they are tough to find many photos of smaller trees. Thanks for sharing

If I was you, I would let them be alone until next Fall (in my climate). At that time, I would separate them, cut the rap roots, and place each one into the single 4” square pot. Good luck .

I think he was speaking seedling cuttings as some do with jpb

I know. I think he is talking about Kusida Matsuo’ s method. I can get the same result with cutting the tap root when the seedling is about 1 year old.

Dayum... I'm ancient then.
I heard once one becomes ancient you start seeing rust stains in thy britches?.....

Sorry as to not derail this thread, I am trying to decide if I should begin my stratification of my Huangshan seeds within the next couple of weeks? I think I will start with warm then a cold with some And others just cold strat then lastly no strat at all? I will document all and see if there is any difference at all?

I got my huangshan on last night after the young guys here shamed me into buying some.
I bought some other cool tree seeds too.
I haven’t noticed too much shrinking, but my trunk is getting thicker. That’s good right?

LOL, I supposed that’s a good thing yes and I think that covers an assortment of things except tumors!!!

Seeds came Friday.
Planted some yesterday, stratifiying another bunch.
Got the Darjeeling weeping cypress too.
If anyone needs seeds of either I have extras.

Is this tree considered Korean Black pine or is that another:confused:?

It’s not a Korean Black pine though closely related it’s also related to the Japanese Black pine. The Huangshan (Pine Pinus hwangshanensis) Huangshan pine, is a pine endemic to the mountains of eastern China. There are many slight differences between them and Black pines.

First 2 huangshan broke the soil today. I will ground grow them the first 3 years probably. I will cut the tip of the candle off next summer. That gave me great results on my scots. Gives low branches on that species

Here's the growth for the first season, just about 5 months old. Winter is right around the corner we'll see how they do? There are some tiny guys mixed in there as well from seed that had no stratification, just put them in blank spots and they popped right up. they are a couple of months old.
Next update SPRING!!!
