Hornbeam #3

So beautiful! Very jealous of your fall color, but not your winter weather. I collected one for my friend in Cleveland and he just sent me a pic of its canopy, spectacular! Mine all look like turds, lol

Beautiful tree, must be a old collected import? I have had a coreana in the ground for a decade and it’s a very slow grower, this one has some serious age

Judy, really stunning and inspiring. Thank you.
Know it’s been said to some degree, but the pot looks like it was made for this tree -the color of the pot is very elegant and seems kinda unique for being a muted tone.

Have yet to see you show much of anything in the way of content, context or credible critique
This was no critique.. just asking what her plans were with this tree.. got to learn from the pro's...

There always has to be some hater who thinks everything is a negative comment.. don't spend to much time thinking much about it.. it's bonsai.. enjoy

Stunning tree @JudyB ! Do you happen to know what the beginnings of this tree were? It is such an odd shape, but it’s very interesting. To me it looks like a chop was made and instead of waiting to create consistent taper from the base, one leader was encouraged to a point, then the usual trunk building process was implemented. Then again, it’s not exactly the usual clean lines and basal flare you’d expect, so 🤷‍♂️. Very cool anyway.
I do not know the origins of this tree. I would guess that it was a collected tree obviously with a second large trunk on the right. It is very powerful in person, and the deadwood fits the rugged survivor feel. I only know that the tree was owned by someone on the east coast, and it wound up on the west coast, where I acquired it from. I like trees that have oddities or much movement, but still retain the classic shape and branching structures.

No! I am not hating, I was honestly asking for your ideas on what could make this tree better! YOU are reading something into my intent that is not there. If you know me at all, you would know that I'm not a negative person, and am open to critique and suggestions.

Beautiful,Judy.Happy Autumn!
Hey,when you and hubby making the move to the meadow & mountain paradise you showed?
The move is sort of on hold, as we are starting to worry about the fire situation out west. Glad that we really don't have to make a decision on it this year...
Thanks and happy Autumn to you too! My favorite time of year.

Nothing is ever really finished... I will continue to ramify the canopy, the overall shape is about where I intend to keep it.
Do you have something in mind that could improve the tree? I'd be happy to hear it.

Really beautiful tree.

No Judy not you. It was a reaction on lancemac's comment.

Wow that is some color! Do you know what variety? Is that Carpinus turczaninowii by chance? I know they tend towards really bright fall colors, always wanted one of those...

I would imagine that it is an import, as these are very slow as you know. I have 4 currently and had one other very large one, and all have good age, and were imported long ago.

Yeah I got very lucky when I found the pot, and had some help from Sergio on it. I was waffling over the feet, thought they'd be too elegant for the rugged aspect of the tree. But it's perfect!

Really beautiful tree.

Oops, sorry, I saw it and didn't realize. I appreciate all comments, and thoughts on trees. Even if you are not very far into the hobby, there is always something your eye can see that might be something that could be built upon. Thanks for clarification.

@JudyB coming thru on the vision she commented towards my post some three years ago...fun! Time flies. Nice photo as well.

A trim before winter storage? (Knowing u have a "controlled" winter quarters)?

😷
Yes I'll probably give this a good cut this winter. I think that the apex has really started to grow together on the left and join the lower structure now, so it should be a better winter silhouette. Time does fly for sure.

Yes that makes sense - now I know what do with collected twin trunks where one is funky and the other is not. I’m becoming more and more of a fan of this style as well, half way between traditional and naturalistic so you get the best of both worlds.

The previous pot was certainly keeping the tree "in bounds", but it was starting to compromise the health of the tree. Before I had it shipped, it was suggested that the tree had been thru a rough patch and was in need of watching carefully. As I know my way around KH, I was not concerned after speaking to the seller about the condition of the tree. I think this pot is a good shape and size and feel. I really like the color, can't go wrong with that color.

I would like to take this tree to a higher level of ramification, which will mean that it will needfully have to grow from this simple structure. It is I agree beautiful as is, but you've seen the photos of great trees with massive ramification? That is what I would like to see me move this tree to.

The small twigging will still occur, but of course on the outside of the canopy. I have mixed feelings sometimes about this, as I do like a simple structure, and out of leaf simple can be very moving. But I want something more for this one. Something that I can add to this remarkable tree.

I appreciate the well thought out comments Lance and your pot assessment is spot on if you ask me.

And not quite a third, LOL....

...all right there on the first page @Michaelb ......and a finished bonsai is a dead bonsai because the goal is for the material to out live you and be passed on.

I keep coming back to sneak peeks at this ‘Beam. @JudyB , I realized that you have several threads that I frequent in this same manner.
I should make a calendar with “pin-up” pictures of These trees... none of those “rail-straight” no-shape landscape trees you buy in black pot mmm—mmm, no ma’am! Full-bodied trees with visually pleasing bends and curves, displaying their proud beauty.
🤦🏽‍♂️🤣🤣🤣

I also feel it necessary to point out, that around these parts... a “Noice” is an Everclear/RedBull/Pineapple juice..

🤓

Yeah I've been lucky finding material that have those characteristics. You just really have to look around a lot.

Perfect. I am envious of everyone's fall color. I have a total of 5 yellow leaves across all my trees.
