Help needed: white mold

Hello everyone. I just found out about the community after googling for white mold help. I know I'm a newcomer so I hope someone could share some advice.

I recently got a beautiful matsu. But on the last two weeks I noticed white mold growing on its branches through the whole tree.

Is this harmful? How should I proceed?
Im so shocked and sad...

Most molds have a hard time dealing with copper, so the fact that it's growing directly next to your wire makes me think that there is an external food source.
Is your tree close to another garden tree that might be full of aphids? Are the leaves of your tree sticky?
Is the mold soft, or crumbly? If it's crumbly, it might be salt from your water or sea spray from a recent storm or something.
