Help identify plant type.

Since this is in a back yard, I also vote for a juniper not normally native to Missouri. Could be J. squamata, or J. communis, or a needle variety of J. chinensis. It is definitely not ERC, as ERC has a very uptight habit. Regardless, most types of juniper make decent bonsai. If it has ground layered in a few places there may be a decent segment for a possible future bonsai.

Not everyone likes working with needle juniper, because of the spiny, and occasionally painful nature of the foliage. But if you want, you should give it a try.

It looks like most of the juniper in the photos is in part shade. Once dug up, and grown in full sun, the foliage will become tighter, more dense and look healthier. All junipers prefer full sun, once they have a healthy root system.
 
Thank you very much for the info. Definitely gonna try to do something with it. I did landscaping for quite a while but wow, I had no clue there were that many different varieties of juniper!
